What is at-home haircolor made of? How does it work?
There are several kinds (see right), but “permanent haircolor is made of the developer, hydrogen peroxide, which bleaches; an alkalizer, usually ammonia or the compound ethanolamine, that opens hair’s outer layer; and the dye precursors, which are oxidized by hydrogen peroxide to form and trap color molecules inside hair,” says GH Beauty Lab Chemist Danusia Wnek. “It works by bleaching hair’s melanin [pigment] and any existing dye and depositing new dye in its place.”
