GREENLAND Greenland is biggest island in the world, and fewer than 58,000 people live there. The island lies in the North Atlantic Ocean, within the Arctic. The total area of Greenland is 2.16 million sq kilometres (836,330 sq miles), including other offshore islands. Almost 80% of the land mass is currently covered by an ice sheet that has an average depth of 5,000 feet (1,500 meters). Today, Greenland is the centre of attention for climate scientists, corporations and foreign governments. A BRIEF HISTORY: Small groups of people arrived in Greenland from 2500 BC, and while some may have died, more groups migrated from North America. women of greenland Arnarulunnguaq Arnarulunnguaq, (1896–1933), a native Greenlander, was a key member of the Fifth Thule Expedition (1921–1924) which crossed the Northwest Passage by dog sled. She was one of the two who accompanied Rasmussen from the Hudson Bay to Alaska, preparing meals and keeping skins and furs in order throughout the two-year journey. Among the Inuit chosen for the expedition were the hunter Iggiannguaq and his wife Arnarulunnguaq. Shortly before their departure, Iggiannguaq died of pneumonia but Arnarulunnguaq insisted on continuing. She was the first woman to complete the long Arctic journey from Greenland to the Pacific Ocean.
