Despite its ancient roots as the crossroads of Africa, the Middle East and Asia, the modern Republic of Yemen is a new state. It is neither successful nor happy. A BRIEF HISTORY From the 7th century, Islam spread throughout Yemen quickly, and spread from Yemen. Yemen was ruled by a series of Muslim caliphs. Yemen developed its own variant of Arab-Islamic culture and society in relative isolation. The towns and tribes of the northern highlands adhered to a Zaydi Shiite sect of Islam, while the coastal regions and the southern uplands with Shafi'i Islam. In spite of the unification, tensions have never left the region. As a Black or Arabian woman, she is an example for many as a Philosopher Queen and important biblical figure. To some Ethiopian Christians, she is almost divine. Unfortunately, there is little evidence that survives the stories. The Queen of Sheba is associated with Yemen, as it is said she lived in Sana'a. Some have written that she actually was African from Ethiopia but she was certainly a woman of colour. Some Christian art depicts the Queen as white and European.
