Great Britain’s World Cup results in the past decade have not been spectacular, certainly compared with the usual peers. GBR had not taken a compound women’s gold medal since 2010, when Nicky Hunt won the stage in Shanghai. The women’s recurve team last took a stage in 2008 and the men’s team in 2012. The last individual recurve gold was Simon Terry in 2009. But for Ella Gibson and James Mason’s mixed team triumph in Berlin in 2019, the cupboard would be relatively bare. That all changed in April 2022, when an apparently relaxed British delegation took compound women’s gold, women’s recurve team gold, mixed team silver and individual women’s recurve gold – their greatest-ever haul from a single World Cup by some margin, in the 15-year history of the…
Archery jumped 12 places to rank as the seventh most popular sport on major social media platforms in 2021, according to a Sport On Social report published in April by creative consultancy Redtorch. In the overall global ranking, World Archery was listed behind only the international federations responsible for badminton, volleyball, football, athletics, basketball and cycling. The digital league table has been published annually since 2017 and uses data that is publicly available. The sport achieved record numbers during the Olympic year, totting up more than 810 million page impressions and 360 million video views in 2021. The World Archery Facebook page recently topped one million followers, having achieved the highest growth rate of any sport during the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Archery was also rated fourth best on both…

A major new initiative aims to raise awareness of sun protection in sport and outdoor recreation in response to a worrying rise in skin cancer in the UK. Sunguarding Sport, which was launched by the Melanoma Fund earlier this month, is backed by more than 40 national governing bodies, including England Athletics, the Welsh Sport Association and Sport NI. Sportspeople receive substantially higher UV exposure, and routinely exceed the recommended exposure limits, increasing their risk of skin cancer. Factors such as sweating, water contact, minimal clothing and lack of shade make wearing sun protection even more important; however, only 50% of people wear sunscreen while exercising outdoors. Since the early 1990s, rates of nonmelanoma skin cancer have risen by 170%, with more than 156,000 cases reported a year. This equates…
A new online platform for buying and selling archery gear has been launched. Sell My Bow was developed by Bow contributor and 2010 Commonwealth Games champion Duncan Busby, who was frustrated both at the high fees for platforms such as eBay and problems with selling via other methods online. There are multiple groups for selling archery kit on sites such as Facebook, but due to the platform’s policy on ‘weapons’, most posts selling archery equipment now have to be creatively renamed. Despite all this, archery has a supportive and sociable community with a thriving second-hand market, and its lack of a dedicated marketplace has been felt for some time – until now. Sell My Bow is designed to be exceptionally userfriendly and with an international reach, and has no…
Richard Priestman, senior Olympic coach for the Great Britain team for the past two cycles, has now taken up a position with the Israel national team, with a remit to cover both Olympic performance and development. GBR is looking for new senior coaches. Priestman (pictured), 66, won bronze medals at the 1988 and 1992 Olympic Games with the British men’s team and went on to coach national squads around the world before returning to Britain in the last decade. Archery in Israel has seen a major resurgence of interest after Itay Shanny, representing the country, made the last 16 at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics with two upset victories over higher-ranked archers. Several other countries have also seen senior coaches move recently. Former Korean head coach Oh Seon Tek has joined…
