Welcome to Issue 188, Traditional Special. This issue’s features are wide-ranging. We have reports, from this year’s Conquest Cup in Türkiye, and from the NFAS 3D Champs here in the UK, followed by an article about the archaeological research that pushed back the history of archery in Europe by some 40,000 years! We address the renewed interest in the Traditional ILF takedown riser, suggesting some beautiful risers, and that is followed by an insightful and inspiring piece by Alex Tyler on the appeal of the Bodnik style field shooting. Adam Miller talks basic traditional gloves and the importance of waxing your string. Lucy O’Sullivan brings a super feature on training heavy, outlining periodisation principles for archers aiming to progress up the poundage scale, supplemented by a case study on how…
On June 19th Archery GB announced Badminton England’s Mark Beecher as the new Performance Director for the AGB’s World Class Programme (WCP). Mark has successfully demonstrated his skills with Badminton England in many ways; he led the delivery of GB and Badminton England’s performance programmes, achieving World, Commonwealth and European medals (even during periods without funding). Mark Beecher commented to AGB: "I'm looking forward to supporting the programme, the talented staff and athletes as we build towards sustained…
World Archery will select its new president this autumn. The election will take place on September 3rd, and the new president will be announced as the first point of business on the agenda of the 2025 World Archery Congress in Gwangju, South Korea. Nomination submissions closed on June 4th, and two candidates have been named for the post, Tom Dielen and Gregory J. Easton. Both men are well-known and have served in many positions within the World Archery organisation and outside. Swiss resident Tom Dielen (57) became executive director of WA in 1996. His order of business at the time was moving the organisation’s headquarters from Milan to Lausanne, Switzerland, closer to the Olympic headquarters. He has since worked for WADA, and rejoined the WA in 2005 as secretary general.…
The new yellow-teal targets will be trialled at the World Games in Chengdu, People’s Republic of China, August 7 – 17, 2025. The traditional yellow-black Field target face will offer a subtle change to enhance the spectator experience, as spotting the thin black arrow shafts is problematic even for the archers and the broadcasters. A range of colour options was tested by the residents of the World Archery Excellence Centre in Lausanne, and Pantone 4185C was selected. For now, the teal target face will be tested out at the World Games only, with the possibility of changing the standard for other future field events. The World Games is a multi-sport event that takes place every four years. The first Games were held in London in 1985. Interestingly, the event features…
