AS I WRITE THIS, I AM JUST BACK FROM THE Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. It was an energetic event filled with new launches and technologies. Reports say that more than 100,000 attendees saw the more than 1,000 boats on display. From what builders told me, sales continue to be strong. ¶ I met one couple who were not boaters before the pandemic, but said they had an interest in it and went all-in Texas Hold ’em style with a 60-foot Prestige in 2020. They’ve been training and cruising with a captain and said they’re almost ready to go voyaging solo. Sunreef Yachts has announced its largest powercat to date: the 100 Sunreef Power. The yacht has accommodations for 10 guests in five staterooms. The master is in the portside hull with ocean views out hullside windows. There are three crew cabins. Hull No. 1’s interior has natural oak veneers, rose quartz and brass accents. Power is twin 1,300 hp diesels. Other notable features include a full-beam salon with opposing settees to port, a bar across and a galley forward, and a flybridge with a spa pool, sun pads and a dining table. ECO-FRIENDLY CRUISING ideas, products and options are now popping up everywhere in the marine world. From yacht construction to engine manufacturing, some of the biggest-name players are making announcement after announcement about ways they’re working to make cruising greener. ¶ For instance, take Heesen Yachts, the Netherlands-based mega-yacht builder that started construction on the 164-foot Project Oslo24 in October. U-BOAT WORX has a custom submarine program that lets owners be part of the design process. One owner told the Dutch company that he wanted to be able to keep pace with large marine life underwater. THE CANDELA C-7 is a foiling boat that employs computer-controlled hydrofoils and an electric outboard for a smooth, nearly silent ride. C-7s are propelled by Candela’s proprietary outboards.
