THERE WAS A QUICK, short chop on Long Island Sound near Stamford, Connecticut, on the early fall day I ran the Hinckley 35. Sunreef Yachts has announced its largest powercat to date: the 100 Sunreef Power. The yacht has accommodations for 10 guests in five staterooms. The master is in the portside hull with ocean views out hullside windows. There are three crew cabins. Hull No. 1’s interior has natural oak veneers, rose quartz and brass accents. U-BOAT WORX has a custom submarine program that lets owners be part of the design process. One owner told the Dutch company that he wanted to be able to keep pace with large marine life underwater. CANDELA’S C-.POD is a very efficient electric motor inside a torpedo-style pod that hangs below a vessel’s waterline (or in the case of Candela’s boats, the hydrofoil line). C-Pods deliver 50 kilowatts of output power, or 67 hp, which Candela achieves with contrarotating propellers driven by dedicated inline motors. THE CANDELA C-7 is a foiling boat that employs computer-controlled hydrofoils and an electric outboard for a smooth, nearly silent ride. C-7s are propelled by Candela’s proprietary outboards. The design of the Absolute Yachts 60 Fly points the way ahead for the Italian builder. Key to the new look is the chopped stern and “cockpit terrace,” which dispenses with the usual molded transom in favor of an essentially blank-canvas, 160-square-foot aft deck. It has nothing more than a stainless-steel guardrail and glazed balustrade to separate it from the swim platform. Gone is any built-in furniture; instead, owners can choose modular furniture or anything else. ¶ The result is serious, customizable outdoor space.
