On a cold, snowy, mid-december evening in 1942, a baby boy entered the world in East New York. Salvatore, whom friends and family would eventually call “Cookie” because of his deep affection for the tasty treat, gained an early, wide-eyed fascination with being on and around the water. He often watched it from his concrete-covered Brooklyn borough. ¶ During grade school, his family left Brooklyn for the suburbs of Long Island, where he fished at a pond and watched a neighbor build a boat in his backyard.
