THE DAY STARTED OUT CALM. Our four-man crew was heading north at a comfortable 24 knots. We had coffee and breakfast and were just enjoying the salt life. We were five hours into a seven-hour run. The ride had been uneventful, with three of us taking in the view from the bridge deck while one of us slept belowdecks. Although the sky was overcast, the sea was glass-calm. ¶ Seemingly out of nowhere, the wind picked up—and so did the seas. At first, there was a spine-jolting chop. We slowed to 18 knots. HERE’S THE GOOD NEWS: Our waterways are a lot safer than they used to be. The bad news, though, is that about two-thirds of the people out on the water have never taken a boating-safety course, and not even 2 in 10 boaters have VHF-DSC radios as part of their equipment in case something goes wrong. ¶ That’s all according to the US Coast Guard, which just released the results of its most recent National Recreational Boating Safety Survey. MORE THAN 200 COMPONENTS go into each of these Machine Lights by Berlin-based artist Frank Buchwald. He was a science-fiction illustrator until 1993, when he began designing and making metallic furniture. His studio is in an old brick industrial building with antique electric switches and dark staircases, along with some visual reminders of World War II. Describing his Machine Lights, he says that they “live from a source other than the hand of man” and are “beings in their own nature.” ¶ The components include brass and burnished, blackened steel, as well as a handblown glass globe. Italian builder Azimut Yachts says its Magellano 66 can top out at 23 knots with a cruising speed of 19 knots, thanks to twin 800 hp Volvo Penta D13s and the use of lightweight carbon fiber in construction of the flybridge, optional hardtop and more. The exterior design on the Magellano 66 is by Cor D. Rover, with interiors by Azimut. One of the noteworthy interior design elements is the fact that the main salon can be fully closed off from the helm and galley, with access to a side deck via a galley door—meaning the crew can do their work and go to their cabins without disturbing the owner or guests while they are relaxing in the salon. Otam says its 65 HT is the fastest boat it’s ever built, achieving 60 knots with twin 2,000 hp MAN V-12s. Francesco Guida handled exterior styling along with the interior and cockpit designs. The cockpit, instead of having a teak sole, has gray Esthec arranged in an athwartship pattern to accentuate the boat’s width. The space is party-ready, with a sink, refrigerator, ice maker, wine chiller and stowage for tableware. The interior decor was inspired by private jets, with a monochromatic black-and-white color scheme that echoes the use of carbon-fiber elements in the boat’s construction.
