Italian designer Valerio Rivellini has unveiled plans for this Extended Explorer concept yacht, which is intended to combine the reliability of military vehicles with the luxury and comforts of a personal yacht. The Extended Explorer was conceived as a world cruiser, with hybrid propulsion and enough stowage to carry everything needed to reach remote waypoints. The main and upper decks are built to expand, allowing owners to configure and then reconfigure everything from seating to dining spaces as needed. Italian builder Azimut Yachts says its Magellano 66 can top out at 23 knots with a cruising speed of 19 knots, thanks to twin 800 hp Volvo Penta D13s and the use of lightweight carbon fiber in construction of the flybridge, optional hardtop and more. Horizon says the owners of Untethered—Hull No. 3 of the FD102—asked for a four-stateroom layout that included an on-deck master with his-and-hers heads, plus an onboard gym and full laundry facilities. The builder made those requests a reality and outfitted the yacht with walnut, dark-wenge accents and bronze inlays. It’s the name of both a town in North Carolina and a city in South Carolina whose differences make them must-visit stops for cruising yachtsmen. ¶ In North Carolina, Beaufort is pronounced Boh-fort, and it’s home to the full-service Town Creek Marina with slips for yachts up to 180 feet length overall. Fishermen know this region well for the annual Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament in June; it’s been held for more than 60 years, with participants landing blue marlin as heavy as 914 pounds. DESPITE MANY YEARS OF FLYING, I still get a feeling of awe at takeoff. A fully loaded Airbus A380 can weigh almost 1.3 million pounds. Now, I know how it flies. I understand the physics. Otam says its 65 HT is the fastest boat it’s ever built, achieving 60 knots with twin 2,000 hp MAN V-12s. Francesco Guida handled exterior styling along with the interior and cockpit designs. The cockpit, instead of having a teak sole, has gray Esthec arranged in an athwartship pattern to accentuate the boat’s width. The space is party-ready, with a sink, refrigerator, ice maker, wine chiller and stowage for tableware. THE PEARL 62 IS AN EMINENTLY PRACTICAL family yacht. It replaces the 65 as the entry-level model in the UK-based company’s three-model portfolio, which includes the Pearl 80 and the Pearl 95. The 62 has done well since its world premiere in Düsseldorf, Germany, a year ago; around 10 units have been sold, including Hull No. 3, which is the one I got aboard. ¶ UK-based naval architect Bill Dixon’s studio draws all the Pearl boats. Like previous Pearls, the 62’s profile is sporty for a design that packs full-size utility, which means a flybridge, cockpit, full side decks and a foredeck terrace. When brothers Bob and Bill Healey bought Peterson-Viking Builders in April 1964, there was no way they could have foreseen a future including two New Jersey manufacturing facilities totaling over 910,000 square feet; about 1,500 employees; close to 5,000 hulls delivered; ownership of companies that handle aluminum tower fabrication, marine electronics and marine service; and dominance of the production sport-fishing yacht market. Yet, that’s where fiveplus decades of boatbuilding has brought them. ¶ Today, Viking Yachts produces 90 percent of every boat in-house, leaving only components such as engines to other companies. HODGDON Tenders’ 10.5- and 12-meter electric Venetian tenders have the same hulls as the builder’s diesel-powered versions, but they produce zero emissions, less noise and less vibration. ¶ The electric versions use Vita Power’s high-performance powertrains, which run dual-propeller stern drives. The smaller tender has a single electric motor and three lithium-ion batteries; the larger tender has dual motors and four batteries.
