We saw elephants wading across the Rufiji River and glimpsed crocodiles slipping into the shallows, but for the most part our attention was focused on birds. We drifted past a colony of white-fronted bee-eaters, festooning branches like strings of Christmas lights. Jacanas tiptoed across rafts of floating water cabbage, yellow-billed storks probed marshy backwaters, while African fish eagles spiralled overhead, their gull-like cries mingling with the wind-rattled fronds of flouncy palm trees.”…
