Transform your outdoor space by swapping out an ordinary rug for DIY painted “tiles” in a bold pattern. Laura Gummerman of A Beautiful Mess, a DIY crafts and food brand, enlivened a basic concrete patio floor with a black-and-white paint design that resembles triangular tiles. The trick to recreating the budget-friendly look: “Clean the concrete well, use a concrete primer before painting your pattern and add a layer of clear matte sealer to extend the paint’s wear time,” she says. CHEESECAKE BITES Using electric mixer, beat 6 oz cream cheese (at room temp), ¼ cup confectioners’ sugar, 1 tsp pure vanilla extract and a pinch of salt until smooth. Add ¾ cup blackberries and beat until blackberries break down. Add 1 cup heavy cream and beat, gradually increasing speed to medium-high, until stiff peaks form. Refrigerate at least 2 hr. When ready to serve, sandwich big dollops between pairs of chocolate wafer cookies or graham crackers. MINT-LIME GIN SMASH In pitcher, muddle 2 cups blackberries and ¼ cup each fresh mint leaves and superfine sugar. Stir in 2 cups gin and ¾ cup lime juice to dissolve sugar. Onone of my last trips before the pandemic shutdown in America, I had the honor of participating in an expert panel on ways to help reduce infant mortality and birth-related disabilities. It was disheartening to hear about the high rates of negative birth outcomes in parts of our country. That said, I also learned about tools and exciting new medical interventions that can help prevent these results. But the technology and expertise can be expensive, and not all hospitals are able to afford them.
