A wonderful country to live or visit, Finland has a fascinating history. Currently, Finland is feeling its closeness to Russia and Putin’s ongoing assault on Ukraine, and has requested entry into NATO. Now is a good time to learn about Finland. Finland was a social democracy even before the country attained full independence in 1917. Historical Scandinavian social democracies include Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Iceland and Finland. Social democracies share common policies about the welfare state whether they are conservative or liberal (free healthcare, public education, family support) but not other economic matters such as military and foreign policy. Sanna Marin was born in Helsinki on November 16, 1985. Her parents separated when she was young and she was brought up by her mother and her mother’s female partner—a family she described as “her rainbow family”. As a young adult she worked in a bakery while studying eventually graduating with a Master’s degree in Administrative Science. Even after graduating high school, Marin worked as a political activist with the Social Democratic Youth where she served as its first Vice President from 2010 - 2012. She then worked on the City Council of Tampere. In 2015, she was elected to Finnish parliament as an MP. In 2019 she became Minister of Transport and Communications.
