What Lead to this Crisis? Sri Lanka, like the rest of the world is facing rising costs and inflation, but a series of bad decisions has deepened the crisis. Nepotism runs deep in Sri Lanka, since independence. Nepotism is the practice amongst those in power to favour family and friends when giving out jobs. Nepotism was prevalent in the recent Gotabaya Rajapaksa government, as 8 of his family members were given posts. Sirimavo was born to a wealthy, aristocratic family in 1916 and educated at a Roman Catholic convent. Graduating with an Honours Degree in Political Science and International Relations from the University of Paris, she returned to Sri Lanka and entered actively into politics. She married Solomon West Ridge-way Dias in 1940 when he was a government minister of Ceylon, then a British colony. Solomon became Prime Minister eight years after independence from Britain in 1956, but he was assassinated in 1959 by a Buddhist monk. Ever wonder what the highest and the lowest paying jobs are for women? Women are still under-represented in the high-test paying jobs, but always making headway. There are certain higher paying jobs that more women engage in in exchange for workplace flexibility. There is a strong link between education and income so almost all of the lowest paying jobs require little or no schooling. Concentrating on STEM majors (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) definitely leads to higher paying jobs, as do MBA’s. Higher paying work almost always requires a Bachelor’s degree or Masters. 80% of the lowest paying jobs are held by women.
