When we debuted our food-forward redesign in July/August, I received a few letters from readers who were wondering if we were going to publish fewer articles in the name of more recipes. I want to assure you that’s absolutely not the case. Since the first issue of Chatelaine hit newsstands in 1928, the magazine has been publishing stories on the issues, big and small, that occupy the minds and hearts of Canadian women. IF YOU’RE SEEKING VIBE-SPECIFIC book recommendations, #BookTok, the reader-friendly hashtag on TikTok, may be the place to scroll. It’s where a glee-club-like chorus of readers enthusiastically talk up their favourite books. And because it’s TikTok—and not, say, the New York Review of Books—expect some dancing, lip-synching and even cake-decorating with your lit-chat, too. The hashtag gathered steam in 2020 as pandemic-bored teen readers began posting about tear-jerking YA faves. A great book doesn’t just land in your lap, but involves scouring the shelves at your local library or bookstore. Now, a handful of book discoverability apps aim to duplicate this book-to-nightstand pipeline. The OG online community for readers, Goodreads, has a discover function on its app that lets you scroll books that its members are talking about, while the recently launched Copper, which its author-founder calls “Instagram for book lovers,” aims to be a platform that connects readers and writers through virtual events and conversation.
