When we debuted our food-forward redesign in July/August, I received a few letters from readers who were wondering if we were going to publish fewer articles in the name of more recipes. I want to assure you that’s absolutely not the case. WHAT IS IT? Rosacea is a chronic skin condition that causes excessive redness, uncomfortable tingling and burning sensations, swelling and dilated blood vessels, as well as papules (swollen red bumps) and pustules (swollen bumps filled with pus). It mainly affects the cheeks, nose, chin and forehead. WHAT CAUSES IT? Rosacea is believed to have a hereditary component and most often presents in women with pale skin between the ages of 30 and 50. Common triggers include stress, alcohol, spicy foods, hot drinks, cold weather, heat and sun exposure. HOW IS IT TREATED? “Someone with rosacea will always be on some type of treatment program,” says Toronto dermatologist Dr. Julia Carroll. LESLIE McBAIN’S SON Jordan was gregarious, popular and adventurous. He loved skateboarding and ran a business installing wood stoves. He’d already faced problems with drugs when his family doctor prescribed oxycodone for a work injury. “I went to [the doctor] and said, ‘This young man is very vulnerable to addiction. Can you please do something else?’ He said, ‘Thanks for the information,’ and continued to prescribe oxy for seven months.” Once Jordan realized he’d become addicted, he sought help from the same family doctor, who angrily blamed him for the outcome, firing Jordan as a patient. Jordan died of an overdose of prescribed pharmaceuticals in 2014, at 25. TWO AND A HALF YEARS INTO THE PANDEMIC, work-from-home set-ups are still being cited as a cause for neck and back pain. A mid-August article in the Irish Times reported that there has been a noticeable increase of people in their 20s and 30s seeking help from physiotherapists to address back pain. Whether in a sun-soaked locale or at my neighbourhood farmers’ market, the sight and smell of a giant pan of paella cooking outdoors always draws me in. There’s something about the mix of saffron and tomato-tinged rice and meat or seafood that just feels special—but the truth is, it’s easy enough to make at home. Shelyna Khalfan knows cancer more intimately than most. In 2007, her dad was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Five days before he died, in 2012, her mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. In 2017, Khalfan, then 43, was also diagnosed with breast cancer. She underwent four months of chemotherapy, then surgery, then 25 sessions of radiation to beat it—and she did. But when Khalfan returned to her job as a Toronto-based occupational therapist, she realized she had a lot of lingering anxiety, anger and fear. PETRA SCHULZ’S SON DANNY was in recovery when he bought the pill that ended his life. Danny, who was 25 when he died of an overdose, had been through cycles of detox and relapse several times. Back then, Schulz knew very little about substance use and says she worries she and her husband encouraged him to taper off his methadone too soon. “We just wanted our old Danny back,” says Schulz, who has become one of the country’s leading harm-reduction advocates. “There was a lot of soul searching after his death.” That was in 2014. GROWING UP, Vancouver-based food writer Bri Beaudoin ate plenty of tofu. “My mom is Chinese and was born in Hong Kong,” she says. “Tofu was a very normal ingredient and used all the time; [my parents] didn’t have money to buy meat or other protein.” This never meant that her childhood meals lacked texture, flavour or the occasional meat-based dish—though she ended up going vegetarian in her mid-20s.
