I COULD SEE FROM my window seat on the final approach into Nice, France, that we were in for some fun on the water. It was a breezy morning on the Côte d’Azur, and Cap d’Antibes was rimmed in white, margarita-style breaking surf. Our ride of the day was the Jeanneau DB/43, an open hardtop yacht that the French builder designed as a premium cruiser. ¶ And cruise, it can. Powered with a pair of 380 hp Volvo Penta D6 Duoprop sterndrives, the Jeanneau DB/43 I got aboard topped out at 32 to 33 knots at two-thirds load with 39 percent fuel, 100 percent water and seven people aboard. THE HACKERS DIDN’T BREAK INTO THE 2018 EUROPEAN Business Aviation Convention and Exhibition. They were invited inside. ¶ By whom? Satcom Direct, a Florida-based firm that specializes in hardware, software and end-to-end connectivity for the aviation and marine sectors. ¶ The company welcomed what’s known as ethical, or “white hat,” hackers to its EBACE booth to create a trial by digital fire. The white hats publicly demonstrated the kinds of real-world cyber threats—including phishing, password deciphering and system compromise—that black-hat hackers pose. PARDO GT52: FIRST MODEL IN A NEW RANGE The Pardo GT52 is the first model in a new range that builder Pardo Yachts in Italy says falls between its Walkaround and Endurance ranges. The GT52 is designed for owners who want more volume and layout flexibility in the guest areas, but without sacrificing performance. Owners can choose either galley-up or galley-down layouts, with the engines placed closer to the stern, allowing more space for the interior cabin options. Mustang Survival’s new line of paddling PFDs and apparel has been a long time in the making, and provides big hints about what will come from the company next. ¶ The brand, which is based in the Pacific Northwest, has been making gear that can handle adventurous environments since 1967. Its flotation devices and apparel have long been favorites among hardcore sailors and fishermen. Fast-forward to 2020, and paddling entered the company’s plans in a much bigger way. IN ALMOST EVERY hotbed of sailing that I’m a ware of, summer weeknights are reserved for semi-serious sailboat racing that almost universally is conducted under the same banner: the beer-can series. The suds and the sailing are equal partners in the enterprise. ¶ My late, great sailing pal Rob Moore, the longtime racing editor for the San Francisco yachting publication Latitude 38, went so far as to create a canon for the exercise. EMIRATES TEAM NEW Zealand’s Chase Zero is the world’s first hydrogenpowered and hydrofoilequipped catamaran. The team designed and built it as a prototype chase boat for the 37th America’s Cup. The high-performance foiler is held aloft by two connected hydrofoils that extend downward via struts from the hull at midship, and by a rudder and static elevator assembly. The boat’s autopilot handles flight control by articulating the flaps on the trailing edges of the hydrofoils and by trimming the rudder’s rake angle. ¶ The team’s biggest challenge in building Chase Zero was time lost to pandemic-driven quarantines and supply-chain disruptions.
