When homeowners Rian and Matt McClevey bought their Fairfax, Virginia, Colonial-style house back in 2011, they were attracted by what Rian describes as “great bones and a nice-sized yard with lots of mature trees.” At the time, the couple had only one of their three children, but their intention was to put down roots in the area. Back then, Rian was working for a national housebuilder, where she became friends with the firm’s senior interior designer, Alexis Dattoli. Their friendship stood the test of time, and in 2019, Rian hired Alexis, who had since started her own firm, to help renovate the family’s home. “We were finally able to focus on fully redesigning the home to meet our personal style; we wanted a place that would be beautiful but also…
In much of interior designer Kristen Nix’s work, you’ll see a variety of wall coverings. From soft, subtle textures to brightly colored patterns, she loves them all. “I feel like nothing changes a space like a wall covering,” she says. So, working with client Erin Donahue Tice was a dream come true, because Erin just so happens to love wall coverings as well. Starting with the formal living room, Kristen opted for a neutral grass cloth wallpaper that brings texture to the room and complements the sisal rug. Considering the room’s small dimensions, Kristen chose a more subdued wall covering so as not to overwhelm the space. She also tweaked the furniture…
Nearly a century old and with a history that includes residents like Barbara and George H. W. Bush, the Formants’ Washington, DC, home was certainly a space worth preserving. So, when homeowners Kelly and John Formant decided it was time for a change, they opted to build onto the existing home rather than start fresh. “They were really excited,” says interior designer Pamela Harvey. “They had lived in the house forever and really wanted a more functional space in the back of the house.” They brought on George Myers, president of GTM Architects, to design the updates, while senior associate Tamara Gorodetzky worked alongside him to bring the details to life. The design included creating an open kitchen and family area behind the original structure for easy flow. “We restructured…
As an avid gardener, Karen Snyder truly loves the spring season. Spending her days in her home flower studio or tending the garden outside her California cottage, Karen brings life to her home with beautiful blooms. However, if you’d known Karen many years ago, a life spent outdoors might not have been the first thought to spring to mind. Growing up in the busy metropolis of Los Angeles, California, Karen always considered herself more of a city girl—that is, until she and her husband built their first house in a small equestrian community outside LA. “Having horses, chickens, and goats in our neighborhood and living more of a country life was really instrumental in shaping my style and design aesthetic,” Karen recalls. Since then, the couple has moved into a…
