The 150-year-old dairy barn original to Gina Galvin’s property is anything but your typical barn. Complete with its original stalls and three large haylofts, Gina’s 30,000-square-foot barn has been refitted to serve as a place of inspiration for retail buyers and shoppers alike. Seated at the “Peacock Park,” the namesake for Gina’s wholesale line of home décor, and filled with artful vignettes, the inspiration arrives in the form of a barn sale that is open for one weekend each year. “It’s really an inspiration station where people can come and get inspired and take away not only products but display ideas,” Gina says. The Barn Sale grew from Gina’s retail background, her love of antiques, and her creative ingenuity. Living in a small town where shopping often means catalogs, surfing…

Jan and Bryan Pruitt relished the excitement of discovering new towns and the challenge of creating new homes along the way, but there’s an undeniable element of disappointment in knowing that it’s only temporary—especially for a family of six. So not only did Jan and Bryan embrace the search for their longawaited permanent home, they also knew exactly what they wanted. Jan loves old houses, but when they came across a captivating new house under construction, she decided she could infuse the home with a timeworn sense of charm. With only the framing complete in the new construction, the couple walked through to get a feeling for the size of the rooms. This was when the “walls” came tumbling down. Jan had the builder remove the framing for the wall…
“I’ve always loved an old house that cried to be fixed up,” reveals Brownie Evans. “So at a time in life when most people scale back, we found ourselves scaling up.” It’s hard to blame her. Brownie’s selfproclaimed “impulse buy” is a magnificent English-style manor home on a historic register. Yet at 80 years old, the property was in need of some serious TLC when the Evans family made it their own. Thankfully, Brownie was up for the challenge. “Our goal was to remodel the home without it looking like we did.” Some components stayed, such as a Mexican tile kitchen floor. Others were enhanced, like a doorway leading out of the kitchen and into a delightful patio ideal for morning coffee. Throughout the home, the connection with nature is…
Forming the northern border of Puget Sound, Whidbey Island seems as though it is part of some vast, uncharted wilderness; instead, it’s located only 30 miles from the bustling city of Seattle. The island’s unspoiled beauty allows many of its residents to enjoy a rural-type existence, and one of them, homeowner George Hamilton, has created a homestead in keeping with this bucolic setting. Dotted with mature fir, hemlock, and cedar trees that frame majestic views of the Cascade Range, George’s property also contains pastureland with an arena and barn for his family’s horses. Style Idea Dress up bookshelves and display niches to show off your favorite accessories or cherished mementos. Here the homeowner has filled alcoves with objects and photos from his fishing lodge. After living here for more than…
