Bang Showbiz Jay Z compared his wife Beyoncé to the late King of Pop, Michael Jackson, in a recent chat with Alicia Keys on Twitter Spaces, saying Beyoncé had surpassed Michael with her iconic 2018 Coachella performances. He said: “Bey’s gonna be mad at (me) for saying this but Michael Jackson never had a Coachella. “The kids are the same. Find me a concert that’s as culturally relevant and thrilling as Coachella. Shingai Darangwa shingai.darangwa@inl.co.za The “Fame vs Clout” boxing match marked one of the few occasions in recent memory where South African boxing had us all glued to our screens. The Rose of Soweto himself was in attendance on Wednesday night. Before the fight, culture commentator Siya “Slikour” Metane spoke to him briefly. Slikour asked him how important it was for boxing to be viewed in that light by young people with more of an interest in music and culture. “I’m happy to see it. This will help to ignite boxing. You know, boxing right now is…
The Washington Post The familiar cascade of green hieroglyphics greets viewers of The Matrix Resurrections, assuring them of the dopamine hit they’ve been looking for. As one character observes in the courseof this alternately pandering and perplexing sequel, there’s no better cure for anxious times than nostalgia. Director Lana Wachowski, who created the original 1999 Matrix with her sister Lilly, leans into that concept with winks and nods that border on the passive-aggressive. (Wachowki co-wrote the script with novelist David Mitchell and screenwriter Aleksandar Hemon.) Larding the new version with Easter eggs, note-for-note recapitulations and even literal clips from the earlier film and its sequels, Wachowski seems to be at war with her audience, rewarding them with deep-cut callbacks one moment only to roll her eyes at the entire…
Nhlanhla Mbatha nhlanhla.mbatha@inl.co.za THE passing of the Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Mpilo Tutu marks the end of a moral compass for South Africa, the African continent, and the world. In their book Moral Intelligence, authors Doug Lennick and Fred Kiel poignantly ask: “What makes humans human?” The authors go on to answer: “Morals.” Tutu had many attributes: they included global moral compass, global moral voice, global reconciler, and global human rights campaigner. He was a citizen of the world. In 1994, during the inauguration of Nelson Mandela as the first black president…
