For 35 years, Govender had dreamt of building a church, but he never got round to it. During the hard lockdown last year, places of worship were not permitted to hold services to prevent the spread of the virus. Govender, who led worship from a local school, then decided to forge ahead with his plan to build a church. On December 16, the father of one opened Jesus for the World Angels Christian Centre in Shallcross and held the first service. His daughter, Tracy Fared, said Mkhize and her mom, Thandie, of Wentworth in Durban, often spent Christmas at her home in Cape Town. He worked as a general practitioner in Isipingo Rail for 50 years and retired in 2015. “My dad grew up in Isipingo Rail and Isipingo Beach. He was a well-known doctor, who was not driven by financial gain or reward but to ensure that everyone who needed treatment received it whether they could pay or not,” said his son, Zeyn Jadwat. Rakesh Singh, 46, unemployed, and Sumantha Moodley, 40, who worked in the hotel industry, got engaged a few years ago and shared a home. Moodley’s cousin, Kiora Govender, said: “They were excited about tying the knot in a Hindu ceremony. Sumantha was the rock in our family. She brought everyone together to celebrate birthdays and special holidays like Christmas.” Govender said Moodley died on December 21. “Rakesh also contracted the virus soon after Sumantha.
