An expertly curated, luxuriously produced compendium of all things Palm Beach, Palm Beach Illustrated brings to life personalities and takes you inside the exclusive homes, parties and interests of the world’s most affluent and influential people.
Palm Beach may have a reputation as the world’s “winter playground,” but its true claim to fame is the generosity of its residents. Since the Gilded Age, when charity balls gave aristocrats a more purposeful reason to dress up and be merry, Palm Beachers have had a tradition of giving. In my 20-ish years in Palm Beach County, I’ve seen that tradition evolve from an act of check writing to impassioned crusades on behalf of causes that are as personal as they are vital. Take the Preservation Foundation of Palm Beach, for example. Preserving the character of a town that has a profound significance in American history is of the utmost importance, and no one knows that better than this month’s cover subject, Pauline Pitt. A longtime resident of Palm…

Self-taught Austrian artist Helmut Koller was first drawn to Palm Beach by its lack of winter, but the palm studded beauty and sophisticated residents soon made him feel at home. Our tropical habitat helps inspire his playful creativity and use of vivid hues. Created in his own style, dubbed Kollerism, Koller’s work comprises a realistic representation of form paired with abstraction of colors. His usual subjects are animals, especially big cats and other species you might spot on safari. “Animals are not really a theme for pop art,” Koller shares, “but there is this play of beauty and danger.” Painstakingly detailed yet splashed with a fantasy of colors, Koller’s art demonstrates both expert skill and unbridled inventiveness—hallmarks of a master. “If I have an exhibition and people look at the…
What: Lake Worth Beach Street Painting Festival When: February 22-23 Where: Downtown Lake Worth Beach (Lake and Lucerne Avenues) The Lake Worth Beach Street Painting Festival attracts more than 100,000 people and results in around 250 new chalk creations each year. While many festivals recruit professionals, Lake Worth Beach prioritizes budding talent. “We have over 100 paintings created by local elementary, middle, and high school students, and that has been a huge part of the success of the festival,” says Maryanne Webber, executive director and artist coordinator. Artists utilize chalk and pavement in place of paint and canvas, so the art lasts only as long as the weather allows, but the creation process is the focus. “It’s a temporary thing,” adds Webber. “You watch it while it’s happening. The art…

An animated reading of Moby-Dick in his high school classroom set up Milton Maltz’s first career as a radio actor. His time spent behind the microphone and penning his own programs sealed the beginning of a long love affair with theater and broadcasting, which eventually led him to the Maltz Jupiter Theatre. Following a successful stint as owners of radio and television stations, Milton and his wife, Tamar, resuscitated the former play-house along with a group of theater lovers. After renovations, it reopened as the Maltz Jupiter Theatre in 2004. But the Maltzes’ support didn’t end there. The Palm Beach Gardens residents provided $7 million for the theater’s endowment in 2012. Then last year, they announced a $5 million matching grant for the theater’s $32 million planned expansion. Combined, the…
