DOING GOOD It’s no secret that philanthropy is a big conversation in Palm Beach County, where significant wealth is juxtaposed with equally substantial need. I’ve seen it firsthand in my own volunteerism for the West Palm Beach Library Foundation, where I serve on the board of directors. Libraries are, by nature, open to all, so the disparity is clear any day of the week, when you can see everyone from well-to-do young families coming in for story time to teenage girls picking up monthly supplies they can’t afford at home. It takes all of us to make a community, and helping each other benefits everyone. That’s the guiding principle of the Junior League, whose Palm Beach chapter turns 85 this year. Over the decades of its existence, its all-female members…
CONNECTIONS My gym closed recently. Let me clarify: the gym that I used to drive my wife to several days a week so that she could work out like a demon closed recently. We found it right before the COVID interruptions and enjoyed the relaxed environment. We became familiar with the faces, followed the schedules of our fellow members, and took pleasure in the “Oh, hey!” moments when we saw that guy who lifted too heavy in the produce aisle at the market. Interpersonal relationships can be like that. You enter a new environment and make quick connections within the situation or circumstance. But often, when the routine is disrupted, those relationships can end just as quickly. Nowadays, Mrs. Duffy and I have no idea what’s happening with Norman the…

For globally recognized West Palm Beach–based fine artist Cayla Birk, savoring art means engaging beyond the visual. Best known for her mixed-media paintings and contemporary Neo-Dadaist style, Birk’s new food-as-art video series transforms significant works into edible masterpieces. A portmanteau of the words “palate” and “palette,” The Palatte reimagines art through the lens of food, transferring mood, energy, composition, and color from canvas to plate. “I’ve always creatively moved through the world and knew my career would be centered around that, but I also come from a hospitality background,” says Birk, who worked in restaurants for more than 15 years. “Over the years, I’ve shared my love for the culinary world via social media, and the response was always overwhelming.” Now entering its third season, The Palatte has featured dishes…
The highly textural nature of artist Kass O’Brien’s work makes it difficult to practice one of the golden rules of art appreciation—look but don’t touch. But that adage is especially important when it comes to her most fragile of art forms. O’Brien’s “kaleidoscope of offerings” includes handmade ceramic pieces for interior settings (think: vases, mirrors, and sconces that can’t help but serve as the focal point of a room) inspired by the natural world, all with an evocative, sculptural style that invites reflection on texture, color, movement, and more. O’Brien took ceramic classes in art school but chose a different route, working as an elementary school art teacher for 20 years. “I fell back in love with ceramics when I was teaching, but I really dove into it when I…
