Don’t expect to hear Virginia Philip complain about her required business trips any time soon. Philip, a master sommelier who runs Virginia Philip Wine Spirits & Academy and serves as wine director for The Breakers, has been making annual pilgrimages to France’s Languedoc region since 2014, when The Breakers began producing its house wine in the village of Béziers, situated an hour west of Montpellier. Carleton Varney likes to tell a story about the first time he walked into the Grand Hotel on Michigan’s Mackinac Island. The 82-year-old decorator, whose personality is as colorful as his designs, had been asked to spruce up the place ahead of a hotel convention the owners were hosting. To get a picture of how societal changes impact women’s fashion, one need only look to the girdle.
