“Style isn’t just about what you wear,” Lilly Pulitzer famously said. “It’s how you live.” That simple statement encapsulates Palm Beach style, which should surprise no one considering it was the mantra of the island’s original fashion icon. Lilly was nothing if not an individualist—elegant on one hand, irreverent on the other. She believed happiness is the best accessory, and true style is all about being yourself, regardless of how far it veers from center. That viewpoint was the guiding principle in selecting the five chic gentlemen for our inaugural “Palm Beach Dandies” feature. Each chosen for his originality and resolute sense of self, this year’s dandies display head-turning style and, more importantly, are fearless in their sartorial choices. Take Wyatt Koch, for example, who combines colors and patterns in…

Downtown Lake Worth will be awash in a sea of rainbow colors March 30 and 31 when Compass Community Center hosts the annual Palm Beach Pride festival and parade. “Your first Pride is a whirlwind, and you feel more alive than ever,” says Julia Murphy, Compass’ chief development officer. “You can come as who you are. You can come in plain clothes, you can come dressed up, you can come in character—but who you are is okay.” The two-day event takes place in Bryant Park and features music, vendors, and lots of activities. The parade occurs on Sunday and kicks off at Lucerne Avenue and M Street. As Murphy explains, Palm Beach Pride is all about acceptance. This family-friendly festival celebrates LGBTQ individuals and culture, but everyone is welcome. “You…
Continued given Compass’ history fighting HIV/AIDS, that battle is still an integral part of what the organization does on a daily basis. “A lot of the wider community believes HIV/AIDS is over, and it absolutely is not,” says Murphy, who notes that Palm Beach County is third in the state for new infections. Compass provides on-site case management in order to connect diagnosed people with health care and support, ranging from insurance to food and transportation to financial issues. “Any barriers they’re having to care, we’re trying to help address them,” says Murphy. Emboldening youth and promoting pride within all LGBTQ people regardless of age is another key element of the Compass mission, one it accomplishes in myriad ways. It hosts support groups, teaches cultural competency, cultivates an LGBTQ-friendly business…
Palm Beach County’s footprint within the global animal conservation community is growing. For more than 25 years, the Rare Species Conservatory Foundation has worked to preserve biodiversity through conservation projects spearheaded at its 30-acre property in Loxahatchee. More recently, RSCF joined forces with Florida International University to form the Tropical Conservation Institute, which unites researchers and students in an effort to save species from extinction and maintain their ecosystems. While the institute is based in Miami, it will operate a new facility in Palm Beach County, following the purchase of five acres adjacent to the Rare Species Conservatory Foundation. This development will allow for great growth for the institute and its mission, to include housing for visiting students and researchers, as well as the means to train the next generation…
