This dish—a light custard and an accompanying salad—showcases the American food I like best: classic late-summer fare, with the farm-stand flavors of sweet corn, tomato, and basil. Though the custard features fresh crabmeat, the vegetables are the star here; even the egg is used primarily to bind them together. With greenmarkets overflowing at this time of year, it’s easy to buy more produce than you need. There’s an art to using everything. A number of furniture pieces by Milanese designer Federico Peri were initially conceived to satisfy his own needs. The first, Scaffale d’Arte (“Art Shelving Unit”), was born of a desire for a desk with an integrated light and shelving. Yet the California native is anything but chill. Ever since he took the helm of Restoration Hardware in 2001, the company’s chairman and CEO has set his sights on a complete reinvention of the way highend home design is bought and sold. While his competitors obsess over online sales, Friedman—who rebranded the former seller of doorknobs and vintage-style furniture into RH, a chic purveyor of Belgian-linen sofas and chandeliers—has instead focused on an audacious transformation of the retail space. “It’s not about the internet,” says Friedman, who is building immense galleries complete with restaurants, roof gardens, and stores. ELLE DECOR: Where is this apartment building located, and what is the neighborhood like? ANNA BARILE: It’s on the east side of Milan, which was built to a master plan in the late 1800s, with broad, tree-lined boulevards. It is still a lovely residential neighborhood. This particular building has elements of the Italian Rationalist style and dates from the 1940s. ED: What was the condition of this penthouse when you started working on the project? AB: There was no apartment! It was just a roof on which to build. There weren’t even perimeter walls. A developer was adding a new penthouse floor to capture the spectacular views. Our client bought almost 2,000 square feet at the northwest corner of the building. ED: How did you become attached to the project?…

Imagine a tree house in a sun-dappled pine-and-ash forest. That was the vision decorator Alejandra Redo conjured when she first arrived at a hillside construction site in Guadalajara, Mexico, where a young family was building an aerie that seemed to float among the trees. The two-level house was being meticulously constructed on a slope overlooking a shallow, secluded valley. Working with Mexico City architects Imanol Legorreta and Pablo Sepúlveda, the owners were involved in every detail of the planning of the steel, glass, and wood structure. “They knew exactly what they wanted, and how they wanted it,” says Sepúlveda. The 6,500-square-foot house was designed to be open to Guadalajara’s benevolent climate. “The light we have is fantastic,” says Sepúlveda, though controlling it can be a challenge. “You have to be…
