Their passions and preferences, whether in politics or media, food or fashion, eventually come into play in society as a whole. Inevitably, as Sam Cooke famously said, a change is gonna come. In the design world, we are already sensing a shift. In this issue, we devote a special section to the ideals and concerns of a new generation of designers and architects and those who are training and inspiring them. As Joseph Giovannini points out in “Building Solutions,” beginning on page 76, young architects aren’t about to forgo the dramatic forms and innovative materials that technology allows. But, rather than creating soaring towers of multimillion-dollar condos, they are focusing on innovative low-cost housing on Los Angeles’s Skid Row, a hospital in Rwanda, and a cultural center in Senegal. CONTINENTAL DRIFT “Most of our work tends to be refurbishing existing properties,” says Scott Maddux of his London-based interior design firm, Maddux Creative—witness the Victorian townhouse that appears on page 152. “It’s rare to get the opportunity to work on a new-build house in London, so you make the most of what you inherit.” Maddux was born in Tennessee but has lived in the United Kingdom since 1994. His firm takes on projects on both sides of the Atlantic—current endeavors include a Gothic Revival mansion in London’s Highgate neighborhood and a summer house in East Hampton. “The abundance of space in the United States affords some freedom from history,” he says. “You can decorate in any style” (madduxcreative.com). DRESS SENSE The graceful grandes dames of fin-desiècle Vienna are about to take another turn across the stage. “Klimt and the Women of Vienna’s Golden Age, 1900–1918,” at New York City’s Neue Galerie, shines a light on the perfectly poised socialites in the Austrian painter’s circle. His sympathetic Symbolist portraits of salon hostess Adele Bloch-Bauer, art collector Serena Lederer, and Ria Munk III, great-niece of newspaper publisher Joseph Pulitzer, take starring roles. These women were never less than dazzlingly dressed, and the museum pays affectionate tribute to their avant-garde sense of fashion. Artist Brett McCormack, who constructs intricate paper sculptures of animals and birds, has created hats and accessories that will be highlighted throughout the show. And Chinese-American designer Han Feng has devised three fabrics inspired by Wiener Werkstätte patterns,…
