SHOOTING STARS In the six years since Instagram burst into the App Store, the social-networking site for the visually oriented has become the clickbait of choice for interior designers—Bunny Williams has 129,000 followers—and, for young decorators especially, a source of new clients as well. “I’ve met so many people on Instagram,” says Mark D. Sikes, whose preppy, all-American style has earned him 75,500 fans. “It’s less polished than a professionally produced design portfolio, but it puts you literally into the hands of the public, showing them who you are and what you love.” Here, 10 design firms talk about the power (and pitfalls) of Instagram. WILLIAM McLURE IV “My business is a testament to the power of Instagram,” says William McLure—although it’s also proof of the advantages of staying off the web. In 2015, the Birmingham, Alabama, native, then working on interiors for a local architect, moved into a 1920s house and began redecorating in his spare time. “I had no internet and no TV, so I kept busy. I was repainting the floors constantly.” McLure posted a few shots of his bohemian blue-and-white living room, hung with his own darkly intriguing paintings. Nearly overnight, he attracted thousands of social media gawkers, and soon, he says, “I had painting commissions worth more than my annual salary.” With enough orders for his artwork to support himself, he can now pick and choose his design projects. “It’s…

It’s natural that the world’s most famous shoe designer believes in the importance of feet: “The first thing you do when you wake up is look down,” explains Manolo Blahnik. Born to cultured parents in Spain’s Canary Islands, Blahnik, a passionate reader and cinephile, has made footwear inspired by Alexander the Great, War and Peace, and Frank Lloyd Wright’s Guggenheim Museum. His long career—from his revival of the stiletto heel in the 1970s to last year’s collaborations with Rihanna—is now the subject of a traveling museum retrospective as well as a new book, The Art of Shoes (Skira Rizzoli). “The foot is the most expressive part of the body,” says Blahnik. “When I was young, I would caress the feet of statues to see how wonderfully they were made.” 1…

The living area’s sofa and kitchen island are of spotted gum to match the floors; there’s a poplar plywood daybed in the open hallway over the living area, above, that is lined with poplar bookcases that echo the walls and cabinets of the kitchen and bedrooms. DRESS CIRCLE In the 1950s and ’60s, even as Christian Dior’s hourglass-figure New Look seemed to define femininity, Spanish couturier Cristóbal Balenciaga took a different tack, conjuring up structured, imaginatively daring architectural dresses and gowns that often surrounded their wearers in billows of fabric. Some people find their true calling as young adults—bitten by an inspiring college course or an encouraging boss. Others come to their vocation preternaturally early, like Marina Adams, who says she knew exactly what she wanted to do from the very beginning. “I feel like I was born an artist,” the New Jersey–bred, New York–based painter says. “Even when I was very small, I wouldn’t leave the house without a purse that could fit paper, preferably colored, and pencils, preferably colored. Unlike pâté, which can have a chunky texture, mousse incorporates butter and cream, which give it a velvety consistency. It spreads beautifully on crusty bread, a cracker, or a stalk of romaine. For extra flavor, you can sprinkle fresh herbs over the top or stir in chopped pistachios, or even truffles. During the 18th and 19th centuries, English military officers rarely left home without their creature comforts. These men traveled to the edges of the British Empire with campaign furniture—bureaus, desks, beds, and chairs that could be taken apart, packed into trunks, and reassembled without nails or tools. Often made from mahogany or rattan and hinged with leather, camp furniture was sturdy yet elegant—“a chic study in form meets function function,” says interior designer Virginia Tupker. Campaign-style furniture can bring a sense of history to a space and at the same time lighten the mood, says designer Kirill Istomin: “A folding table has a temporary feeling, but temporary in a good way. GIUBBILEI ON TIMELESS GARDENS With their trim hedges, symmetrical rows of trees, and striking contemporary sculptures, the gardens of Luciano Giubbilei are meticulously layered compositions of leaf, grass, stone, and light. It’s one of the nearest surfing beaches to the city, and it’s powerfully beautiful, with black sand and a mountainous backdrop. It can be wild and brooding.
