DRESS CIRCLE In the 1950s and ’60s, even as Christian Dior’s hourglass-figure New Look seemed to define femininity, Spanish couturier Cristóbal Balenciaga took a different tack, conjuring up structured, imaginatively daring architectural dresses and gowns that often surrounded their wearers in billows of fabric.
