It’s been two years since I first used this space to write about our team’s commitment to building a more inclusive Chatelaine. We pledged that, going forward, 40 percent of our freelance content would be created by writers who are Black, Indigenous or otherwise racialized. We’ve succeeded in this goal for a second year: On average over the past 12 months, we’ve spent 44 percent of our monthly freelance budget commissioning work by racialized writers. I’m also happy to announce that we’ve launched our inaugural paid editorial fellowship for racialized journalists. Ayesha Habib will join our team for the next three months, editing stories for the magazine as well as for chatelaine.com. Matters of life and death In our July/August issue, we told you about Madeline, a woman living with a disability who may soon opt for a medically assisted death (“Madeline Can’t Afford to Live with Her Illness. She May Choose to Die Instead”). Readers took to Twitter to respond. I am so angry on behalf of Madeline and everyone who is disabled and reduced to dying to eschew crippling poverty. I am a “lucky” disabled person with corporate benefits and a spouse, and still my loss of income was tough.
