As of this writing, the UK has just woken up to the news that it is going back to essentially full lockdown until at least February, possibly March, with schools, universities and (yes) archery ranges all closed for the foreseeable future. Thirty-one elite archers competed at the Lausanne Invitational tournament in the World Archery Excellence Centre. The Netherlands' Steve Wijler shot a perfect four sets to beat reigning indoor World Series champion Florian Unruh for the recurve men’s / senior title. Lisa Barbelin, Mike Schloesser and Erika Damsbo also won in their respective categories. Thirty-one archers were invited to compete at the exhibition competition in Lausanne. Invitations were based both on the results of the first remote stage of the indoor circuit and the archers’ position in the open ranking. The Lausanne Invitational coincided with the second remote stage of the 2021 Indoor Archery World Series, where more than 5000 archers worldwide registered to participate. In field, the flat open expanses and precise repetition of target archery are replaced by rough terrain and a need for adaptability. A field shoot will involve trekking around a course of differentlysized targets set at a range of distances – most likely combined with a myriad of steeply angled shots and tricky lighting. In case this wasn’t hard enough, rounds can also involve unmarked targets, leaving the archer to guess the distance. Whilst I’ve known about field archery as a concept for years, giving it a proper go had never really occurred to me before this summer. The aim of dampers is to reduce or completely eliminate possible vibrations that occur in the bow. The most common principle of a damper is that a rubber block is screwed to the bow or an associated component and a weight is (usually) attached to the opposite side. The mass of the weight, which is set in vibration after taking a shot, is intended to reduce possible bow movements during and after the shot. This is now probably the most common variant of the damper. Depending on the manufacturer, these can vary greatly in shape, colour and design. But there are also other variants for dampers. Archery GB has been awarded £4.7m for performance archery over the next Olympic cycle, which will enable support for Olympic and Paralympic athletes right through to the Paris 2024 Games and beyond. The increase was a surprise boost for the sport at a time when the UK economy faces huge pressures as a result of the pandemic. The elite UK side of the sport is in a improved position after good results for both the Olympic and Paralympic teams in 2019 including winning six spots for the Tokyo Games, the women’s team winning bronze at the World Archery Championships and Jess Stretton’s individual silver at the World Para Archery Championships. Dave Cousins, the 1999 World Archery champion in 1999 gave a vintage performance shooting a perfect score of 600 during round two of the virtual Indoor Series on 20th December. The American compound archer joins a select band of archers to have shot a perfect 60-arrow 18-metre round. "I shot a great round, had a great day, was really in the groove," said Cousins. A new year is historically the time for making resolutions and planning for the year to come. Nobody has lived through a year like 2020 before, which has tested the mental (and physical) strength of us collectively like no other. Olympic athletes work in four year cycles, and the postponement of Tokyo 2020 has upset a lot of work/life balances. The German women's recurve team were on a career high, slightly clouded by the injury and current rehabilitation of Lisa Unruh. Still, the 31-year-old Richter, from Berlin, was perhaps most experienced German recurve archer. She made her debut as a cadet on international competition fields in 2003, and went to her first Olympics in 2012 at Lord’s Cricket Ground, finishing the individual competition in 17th place. Two years later she was the first German female archer to win individual gold at a World Cup, taking an individual bronze at the World Cup in Wroclaw. Most Russians don’t realise how much archery is in their culture. It is only when it is pointed out to them, that they realise practically all their fairy-tale princes and ‘fools’ are usually either on a horse or shoot a bow. Countless old songs and sayings refer to bows and arrows, from bylinas to wedding rituals. Russian folklore is filled with references to the ‘noble weapon’. Here are just a few glimpses into the ‘legendary’, the ‘fantastical’ and the ‘real’ in ancient Russian culture. BYLINA Bylina (rus. “ылина”), literally translates as “something that was”.
