The Universiade is a biennial multisport event for students in full-time education. FISU, the international federation for university sports, has announced that it will drop the name ‘Universiade’ in favour of World University Games from 2020, along with some new branding. The first Universiade was held in 1959, and the most recent edition in Napoli in 2019 attracted 6000 student athletes across 15 sports. Archery has been part of the competition since 2003 and became a core sport in 2017, with both recurve and compound contested. Lee Woo Seok, Kang Chae Young, Anton Bulaev and Andrea Becerra are archery’s reigning champions. Former winners include Olympic gold medallists Viktor Ruban, Ki Bo Bae, and Park Sung Hyun. Colombian compound archer Sara Lopez has been chosen as archery’s nomination for the World Games athlete award. The World Games is a multisport event held every four years with a programme that features compound target archery, and recurve and barebow field archery. It specifically features events that are not held in the Summer Olympics. Lopez won the last edition of the World Games, held in Wroclaw, Poland, in 2017. She also won a record fifth World Cup Finals title in Moscow in September and took gold in the Pan American Games, the first competition to be held there. The rise in barebow archery, especially using the stringwalking technique, keeps bringing us new products that are designed to provide more precision with new features. Michael Meyer is currently a pioneer in the field, after he caused a sensation around the stringwalking world a few months ago with his innovative Zniper arrow rest. Now, after a lot of tinkering, Meyer has launched a new tab, the Zniper Barebow Tab. At a price of around £95 in the UK, it is anything but inexpensive, but has some surprises on board. ELLISON MAKES HISTORY WITH A 900 At the 54th annual Vegas Shoot, American archer Brady Ellison shot the first 900 score by a recurve archer in the history of the event. The Vegas Shoot requires archers to shoot thirty arrows a day for three consecutive days, with a maximum total score of 900, a score only ever previously achieved by compound archers. World Archery named its athletes of the year for 2019 in a ceremony at the Vegas Shoot in February. Brady Ellison, Kang Chae Young, Mike Schloesser and Sara Lopez were named the best archers in recurve and compound. Asking a field archer when the indoor season starts and you are likely to get a funny look. The National Field Archery Society and English Field Archery Association host all shoots in woods and competitions run outdoors all year round and in all weathers. If you are looking to get in more shooting, you can enjoy winter field archery with a few small adaptations. Even in a familiar set of woods, shooting in winter gives a new perspective. There may be less daylight but in deciduous areas, parts of the wood which are usually in shadow are now open. The Lancaster Archery Classic, the largest tournament not part of the Indoor World Series concluded in Mannheim, USA at the end of January, with around 2000 archers competing. Lancaster has very different rules from most other sanctioned indoor tournaments, with a 60-arrow qualification on a three spot target face and the small 10-ring (2cm), normally used by compounds, scoring 11 and the larger 4cm 10-ring scoring 10 for all bowstyles. Thus, the maximum score is 660 points. The finals feature a winner-stays-on style shootdown in which participants are often asked to give commentary after each end. GBR SELECTION FOR TOKYO IMMINENT As previously reported, Great Britain won six spots (three men, three women)for Tokyo at the World Championships in Den Bosch in 2019 – the only non-Asian country to achieve this. Four men and three women have been officially named to the Olympic squad: Tom Barber, Tom Hall, Patrick Huston, Alex Wise, Sarah Bettles, Naomi Folkard, and Bryony Pitman.
