Participating in 2022’s 50th Anniversary Speed Week, held at Coniston Water in Cumbria, UK, Cox Marine achieved the industry’s first-ever Diesel Outboard World Speed Record. On Thursday November 3, the Cox Marine team with its vessel Pegasus achieved an average speed of 62.27mph. Measured across a kilometre-long course requiring a flying start, Pegasus, a 21ft Hallett Vector piloted by experienced powerboat racer Adam Brown, was required to travel the course in both directions, within an hour to minimise any potential wind advantage. With official Water Speed Record timekeepers’ scrutiny, time and the speed in both directions were recorded and then averaged over the two runs. Battery manufacturer Century Batteries is hoping the chance to win free fuel for a year will encourage boaties and jet-skiers to check their marine battery to ensure they are safe on the water. Battery-related issues annually account for more than 50% of incidents Coastguard volunteers respond to across New Zealand. Century Batteries Australian and New Zealand national training manager Paul Linehan said many boaties were using an automotive [car] battery instead of a specific marine battery. The official logo of the 37th America’s Cup was revealed in Barcelona recently at the Museu Maritim de Barcelona. The logo is the work of design house Pràctica. “The America’s Cup symbol has been redrawn and synthesised so it can be reproduced in all sizes and media and is aligned with a bold ‘B’ typeface that directly represents Barcelona,” said Pràctica’s Javier Arizu. The primary colours are supported by a vibrant colour palette that speaks about Barcelona’s energy. The Moreton Bay region of about 800 square miles is a myriad of islands and swatchways where the cruising sailor could spend years exploring. Safely below the cyclone belt of the Tropic of Capricorn, so with year-round sailing, it’s been a good place to base our pocket cruiser for a year. After Covid cancelled the series last year, drivers had plenty of pent-up adrenaline to unleash. In the big boys’ toys MouthFRESH Superboats class, defending champions and pre-round favourites Hamilton’s Sam Newdick and navigator Shama Putaranui’s 1000hp PSP Racing boat held out against the hard-charging Wired superboat of Tauranga’s Aaron Hansen and Julie-Anne Shanks. The Bar’s Bugs superboat, driven by Gisborne’s Blake Briant, was third. Rāhiri, Outward Bound’s newest vessel, is magnanimously named after Ngati Rāhiri – the hapu of Te Ātiawa that lived in Anakiwa. Rāhiri will be used as one of three safety vessels at Outward Bound. The outdoor school is required to have three fully operational launches to ensure its educational sea activities can take place safely. The launches support sea activities, including sailing cutters, waka ama, long swims, and transporting students to various locations around the Marlborough Sounds. The 10.7m Rāhiri is a Tortuga design with a displacement hull from Tim Barnett. She was built by Davie Norris Boatbuilders for around $500,000 and is the reward for years of fundraising and generous donations from Outward Bound supporters. Tom Saunders picked up the big prize, the Orbit World Travel Sailor of the Year Award, at the annual Aon Yachting Excellence Awards. The 30-year-old late last year became just the second New Zealander to win the ILCA 7 (Laser) world title since the first event in 1974 and backed that up with fourth at the 2022 world championships. Saunders’ form over the past 12 months sets him up well for a tilt at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Saunders collected the Sir Bernard Fergusson Trophy from Governor-General Dame Cindy Kiro, who is also Yachting New Zealand’s patron, at a gala awards dinner attended by more than 250 people at the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron. The Auckland Yacht and Boating Association Inc. (AYBA), which is an association of most of the Yachting and Boating Clubs in the Auckland Region, is working in conjunction with other marine-related organisations, including the Marina Users Association, to protect our coastal environment. We are very aware of the need to protect our foreshore, coastline and offshore islands from invasive species we are also very aware of the Bio-security Act, which is not a policy or a preference – it is the law! NEW ZEALAND COMPANY ANURA LTD, specialising in amphibious enablement technology for the marine sector, has announced a new electric-powered version of its amphibious system. The first of its new Electric over Hydraulic (EOH) power units has been installed in a high-specification carbon fire tender and is performing to specification. EOH further expands Anura’s offering, providing craft owners with the option of either internal combustion (ICE) or electric power to run the amphibious system. EOH has been developed in response to market demand for an electric power option (reflecting current EV trends and benefits, e.g. quiet, enviro-friendly etc.). However, the company’s market feedback indicated there was concern about the safety and reliability of electric wheel motors when operating fully immersed in salt water. The 45 is the largest of the GT (Gran Turismo) range, a beamy, comfortable and fast cruiser which offers plenty of ‘outdoor living’ space as well as a well-appointed cabin. Instead of the traditional open cockpit, it has a very large, hydraulically operated boarding platform, with a massive tender garage opening onto it, on top of which is a generous day-bed, under cover of the cockpit roof. Pat bought the Hustler 570 bowrider runabout new in 1987, and it’s given him 35 years of fun on the water, fishing and water-skiing. However, with the original 200hp two-stroke outboard reaching the end of its useful life, it was time for a new engine: a slightly lower-rated but more modern and efficient Yamaha F150 four-stroke, which can push it to a thrilling 45 knots flat out. “The new four-stroke engine is great – it’s quieter and it doesn’t smoke,” Pat says. Malta is surrounded by crystal-clear, azure water and diving is a popular attraction. One of the most visited sites is the wreck of the WWII British destroyer HMS Maori, lying near Grand Harbour. Despite the name, she was a British – not New Zealand – vessel. One of seven Tribal-class destroyers (LOA 114.9m), she and her sisters were named after various indigenous peoples in the Empire’s many dominions. Launched in September 1937, she saw action around the Med and in the Atlantic (she participated in the hunting and sinking of Germany’s mighty Bismarck battleship in May 1941). But her career ended abruptly when she was bombed and sunk in February 1942 by German aircraft while anchored in Grand Harbour.…

A mountain backdrop to a high-altitude classic boating event is just the beginning of the stunning visuals offered by the NZ Antique & Classic Boatshow, held annually at Lake Rotoiti in the Nelson Lakes National Park. Okuma New Zealand is partnering with Gulf Guardians to help regenerate the Hauraki Gulf by putting mussels back into the ocean. The once abundant Hauraki Gulf biome is on the brink of collapse and the Gulf Guardians Fund has been set up by Auckland Foundation to support vital work to regenerate the health of the Hauraki Gulf. By donating 100 tonnes of mussels towards shellfish restoration programmes, Okuma is allowing vulnerable underwater species a second chance. Mussels are more than salty, bearded molluscs – they’re underwater eco-vacuums that stabilise the seafloor, provide a food source and support a thriving ecosystem. The decision to incorporate a boat show into the Easter Show followed an article in the February 1955 issue of Seaspray magazine suggesting there was a need for a first-class boat show in Auckland. The initial show worked well and, as a result, was promoted under its own name – the Auckland Easter Show Boat Show – from 1957 until 1960. Perhaps because of the success of these early boat shows, the Outboard Boating Club decided to run its own display of boats in the Farmers car park in the spring of 1958 and 1959, and at Campbell Motors in 1960. AS THE $20 MILLION QUEENSTOWN MARINA officially opened, plans were immediately announced for Stage Two. Work on the 85-berth Stage One started when Lakes Marina Projects Limited first applied for resource consent back in December 2013. Construction started in November 2017 and the floating part of the marina was handed over in September 2019. Construction of Stage One was completed just as Covid hit, and despite the timing, the interest for berths has been unprecedented over the last two years. With just 15 private and commercial berths currently available to lease, the time is right to start construction of Stage Two mid-next year.
