A few years ago Boating New Zealand’s Westhaven office looked out over Pier 21’s bustling haul-out facility. The travel lift and hardstand was busy year-round, but never more so than in the weeks leading up to Christmas, catering to vessels of every type, both motor and sail, and serving the needs of individual boat owners and the precinct’s marine trades. Fast-forward to 2022 and this facility is no more, its hardstand area and lift soon to be swallowed by a major mixed/residential development. A mountain backdrop to a high-altitude classic boating event is just the beginning of the stunning visuals offered by the NZ Antique & Classic Boatshow, held annually at Lake Rotoiti in the Nelson Lakes National Park. The first event back in 1999 drew 35 boats, many of them home-built clinkers and runabouts. Two decades on, and after two years of Covid disruption, around 150 boats are expected. These days humble backyard boats share space on the foreshore with the likes of a 1964 Riva powerboat once owned by former US first lady Jackie Kennedy. Participating in 2022’s 50th Anniversary Speed Week, held at Coniston Water in Cumbria, UK, Cox Marine achieved the industry’s first-ever Diesel Outboard World Speed Record. On Thursday November 3, the Cox Marine team with its vessel Pegasus achieved an average speed of 62.27mph. Measured across a kilometre-long course requiring a flying start, Pegasus, a 21ft Hallett Vector piloted by experienced powerboat racer Adam Brown, was required to travel the course in both directions, within an hour to minimise any potential wind advantage. With official Water Speed Record timekeepers’ scrutiny, time and the speed in both directions were recorded and then averaged over the two runs. Rāhiri, Outward Bound’s newest vessel, is magnanimously named after Ngati Rāhiri – the hapu of Te Ātiawa that lived in Anakiwa. Rāhiri will be used as one of three safety vessels at Outward Bound. The outdoor school is required to have three fully operational launches to ensure its educational sea activities can take place safely. The launches support sea activities, including sailing cutters, waka ama, long swims, and transporting students to various locations around the Marlborough Sounds. The 10.7m Rāhiri is a Tortuga design with a displacement hull from Tim Barnett. She was built by Davie Norris Boatbuilders for around $500,000 and is the reward for years of fundraising and generous donations from Outward Bound supporters. Okuma New Zealand is partnering with Gulf Guardians to help regenerate the Hauraki Gulf by putting mussels back into the ocean. The once abundant Hauraki Gulf biome is on the brink of collapse and the Gulf Guardians Fund has been set up by Auckland Foundation to support vital work to regenerate the health of the Hauraki Gulf. By donating 100 tonnes of mussels towards shellfish restoration programmes, Okuma is allowing vulnerable underwater species a second chance. Mussels are more than salty, bearded molluscs – they’re underwater eco-vacuums that stabilise the seafloor, provide a food source and support a thriving ecosystem.
