Participating in 2022’s 50th Anniversary Speed Week, held at Coniston Water in Cumbria, UK, Cox Marine achieved the industry’s first-ever Diesel Outboard World Speed Record.
On Thursday November 3, the Cox Marine team with its vessel Pegasus achieved an average speed of 62.27mph.
Measured across a kilometre-long course requiring a flying start, Pegasus, a 21ft Hallett Vector piloted by experienced powerboat racer Adam Brown, was required to travel the course in both directions, within an hour to minimise any potential wind advantage. With official Water Speed Record timekeepers’ scrutiny, time and the speed in both directions were recorded and then averaged over the two runs.
Vessel modifications were limited to a foot pedal, a lift plate to allow for the boat’s low transom height, different propellers, and the diesel used.…
