Giving David His Due I got a few e-mails from people about the article “Big Bad Blades” in the Winter BLADE® that reported ABS master smith Mike Quesenberry won the Best Bowie Award at the 2017 Art of Steel Knife Show. Mike didn’t come to the 2017 show. It was ABS master smith David Lisch who won Best Bowie at the 2017 Art of Steel Knife Show. Before being dismantled, “An Archaeological Investigation of the Retreat of the Mexican Army after the Battle of San Jacinto, the Sea of Mud Exhibition,” enjoyed a long run in the Cushing Memorial Library at Texas A&M University. After its defeat at the Battle of San Jacinto, the Mexican Army became bogged down in terrain which Santa Anna’s successor, Vicente Filisola, described as un Mar de Lodo, or sea of mud. This unforeseen disaster prevented military action against the Texan Army and ignited the chain of events that contributed to the establishment of the Republic of Texas. The Sea of Mud Exhibition told the story through numerous objects abandoned by the retreating army along a route rediscovered by Dr. Gregg Dimmick, an archaeologist, Texas historian and author. Right up front, I can say the Benchmade Infidel and Conquest Tactical Fury out-the-front (OTF) autos are addicting to fire and retract. As far as the tactical side of the house, these two knives, as with most autos, make way too much noise opening. Nonetheless, they still must be able to cut. It’s my job to see if they do. SLICE TESTS Starting with a 20-pound bond paper slice to check out-of-the-box sharpness, the Infidel cut smoothly with both edges. It had a fine edge on it that zipped through the paper with no snags. The Fury was just as smooth slicing but just slightly more aggressive biting into the bond paper. Stallone or McQueen? I I really liked your Rambo anniversary edition (January BLADE®). Though not really a question, I was intrigued by super-Rambo collector Randy Rousseau’s story on page 22 of that issue, including the sidebar on page 23 about the actors who were considered for the part of Rambo before Sylvester Stallone—specifically, Steve McQueen. Since in the movie Rambo rides a motorcycle in his escape from jail, McQueen would have seemed a perfect fit for the role given his love of racing motorcycles and cars—not to mention the scenes where he rides a motorcycle in the World War II prisoner-of-war classic, The Great Escape. The options are many, from the traditional wooden sheaths of the Pacific Islanders and South American jungles to old-school leather and more modern choices like moldable Kydex®. On a warm and sunny Saturday morning in August 2010, my friend and fellow BLADE Magazine Cutlery Hall-Of-Fame© member, B.R. Hughes, and I left the American Bladesmith Society All-Forged Knife Expo at the Gunter Hotel in San Antonio, Texas, on foot to hike the quarter mile to the Alamo. Our mission was to see the coffin-handle bowie knife relic in the Sea of Mud exhibit at the Alamo gift shop. The relic had been unearthed years earlier by Dr. Gregg J. Dimmick, author of the highly acclaimed book, Sea of Mud.
