Giving David His Due I got a few e-mails from people about the article “Big Bad Blades” in the Winter BLADE® that reported ABS master smith Mike Quesenberry won the Best Bowie Award at the 2017 Art of Steel Knife Show. Mike didn’t come to the 2017 show. It was ABS master smith David Lisch who won Best Bowie at the 2017 Art of Steel Knife Show. I guess because I own the show now some folks thought I told the story’s author, Daniel Jackson, that Mike won the award this year. Who knows? Stallone or McQueen? I I really liked your Rambo anniversary edition (January BLADE®). Though not really a question, I was intrigued by super-Rambo collector Randy Rousseau’s story on page 22 of that issue, including the sidebar on page 23 about the actors who were considered for the part of Rambo before Sylvester Stallone—specifically, Steve McQueen. Since in the movie Rambo rides a motorcycle in his escape from jail, McQueen would have seemed a perfect fit for the role given his love of racing motorcycles and cars—not to mention the scenes where he rides a motorcycle in the World War II prisoner-of-war classic, The Great Escape. Much as it had been a year-and-a-half earlier for BLADE Magazine Cutlery Hall-Of-Fame© members Jim Batson and B.R. Hughes, it was a warm, beautiful January day in 2012 in San Antonio, Texas. Along with them and other cutlery enthusiasts, I was there for the old American Bladesmith Society All-Forged Knife Expo. Jim and B.R. invited me to take the short walk with them from the show venue, the historic Gunter Hotel, to the Alamo, just as the two of them had done together in August 2010 (page 12). On a warm and sunny Saturday morning in August 2010, my friend and fellow BLADE Magazine Cutlery Hall-Of-Fame© member, B.R. Hughes, and I left the American Bladesmith Society All-Forged Knife Expo at the Gunter Hotel in San Antonio, Texas, on foot to hike the quarter mile to the Alamo. Our mission was to see the coffin-handle bowie knife relic in the Sea of Mud exhibit at the Alamo gift shop. The relic had been unearthed years earlier by Dr. Gregg J. Dimmick, author of the highly acclaimed book, Sea of Mud. Made during Cutlery Hall-Of-Famer James Bowie’s lifetime, the relic may have been used in the defense of the Alamo, which fell on March 6, 1836.
