THE past few years have seen the rise of the hard wax at the expense of easy-on-the-arm liquid versions. Just about every manufacturer has a hard wax in its line-up – they’re often pricey, and we even found one that smelled of peppermint chocolate. Key for our test is durability. IT’S tempting to think that just because leather upholstery is tougher than fabric, it doesn’t need to be looked after. But that supposedly rugged exterior hides a natural material that needs to be nourished if it is to last. Replacing the natural oils keeps it supple and less prone to cracking. The problem is aggravated by the thinner leather used in modern cars, as well as heated seats, which dry out leather quicker, requiring regular treatments. We tested the protection they provide by seeing how long it took for a water droplet to soak into the leather. DIRTY seats and upholstery can creep up on you, as you often don’t realise how bad it is until you’ve started cleaning. Constant use of the driver’s seat will see grime build up, particularly after a winter of wet and muddy clothes. Our test searched for the best interior cleaner to remove not just ground-in grime, but the spills and marks that come from everyday use. CLEANING wheels is one of the toughest valeting jobs. Dust is baked on by the heat from the tyres and brakes, and the chemicals used to shift it are often aggressive, best applied wearing gloves and protective glasses. AFTER over a decade of testing halogen headlamp bulbs, we broke new ground with our first test of HID lamps – the popular D1S. The light source is an arc between two electrodes with these bulbs, and they’re at the heart of the xenon systems which first hit UK roads 10 or so years ago. SCOTLAND is considering raising speed limits and introducing new parking restrictions after it was granted new devolved powers from Westminster. The Scotland Act 2016, which came into force at the end of May, gives the Scottish Parliament control over a range of laws including abortion, gambling, policing and transport policy. Outlawing inconsiderate parking – for example on pavements – is set to be the first change after failed attempts by Holyrood in the past. Speed limits are likely to be altered, too. Scotland has had some control over them since 2012, but the latest changes give ministers greater control. LOTS of rain means plenty of mud tracked into the car unless you’re very careful or lucky. As the mud dries it doesn’t take long before the cabin is looking scruffy and in need of a spruceup, which is where an interior cleaner comes into its own. A quick spray and wipe can see mud and marks removed, plus dust from the dash top and greasy smears from those meals on the move. Our test to find the best focused on their cleaning ability, rather than the finish each leaves behind. IT doesn’t take much for marks to appear on paintwork. Scratches from bushes, careless car washing, bird droppings – they can all damage the clear coat and mask that showroom shine. Deep scratches will need professional attention with a machine polisher and different grade compounds, but lighter marks can be removed at home. Volkswagen Passat Estate HOW do you add instant “kerb appeal” to your property? In art director Darren Wilson’s case, parking the fine-looking Volkswagen Passat Estate outside does the trick. With no driveway, Darren has the Passat sitting on the street, and has had many favourable comments from the neighbours. They’re not the only ones impressed with the Volkswagen’s quality.
