AT THE APRIL Home Furnishings Market in High Point, North Carolina, even the most casual observer could notice a decidedly West Coast vibe in the middle of the Carolina Piedmont. Four A-list companies—Baker, Castelle, Century, and Hickory Chair—featured fall collections by Los Angeles–based designers. While the looks from each showroom were as unique as the designers who created them, the mood was singularly California cool. When Barbara Barry began to imagine her latest collection for Baker—a collaboration celebrating its 20th year—she wanted to conjure the natural beauty of her home state. “This collection was inspired in part by my personal move into the countryside and more into nature,” says the designer. “California is more than a place; it’s a state of mind, an open mind and an ease of living.”…

ALTHOUGH STILL IN HER EARLY 30s, Atlanta interior designer Allison Hennessy has already made her mark in a crowded field, first working with boldface names such as Phoebe Howard and Meg Braff, and then opening her eponymous company in 2010. She’s also been included on both Traditional Home’s and Southern Living’s lists of up-and-coming designers. Hennessy describes her style as tailored, edited, and classic wrapped in a modern sensibility. “I don’t like a lot of frills or for anything to be too heavy or ornate,” she says. “Instead I focus on the materials and textures to bring interest to a room.” In that vein, the designer uses a lot of hand-painted and block-printed fabrics, sea grass, sisal, rattan, rich linen velvets, brass, and painted light fixtures. Adri’s inspiration My single-source inspiration was the mustard combo rose, which works well with many different palettes, like the cream, pale peach, dark mauve, and burgundy one I used. I also wanted to include foliage that was distinct from the traditional blooms found at the flower market. I visited one of my favorite local nurseries to search for unique accent pieces that would complement the muted palette I envisioned. Delicate eucalyptus, coleus, and dainty foliage added interest without overpowering the focal pieces. HOW-TO Maple Leaf Rosettes MATERIALS: 5–10 leaves for each rosette • Thin wire INSTRUCTIONS: To create the center, fold one leaf in half horizontally, undersides facing; starting at left side, roll up. Fold a second leaf in half; place rolled leaf at left side of folded leaf, and roll the two together. Repeat until center is desired size. Wrap unfolded leaves around center, undersides facing out. In his new book, Blue & White and Other Stories (CICO Books, 2017), the erudite British designer reduces the daunting subject to its essence: a tool to be used as an expression, a reflection of the self. Young girls could also perk up their bedroom desks with fluffy roses, big Oriental poppies, and zinnias handcrafted from tissue or crepe paper, thanks to a profusion of flower-making kits soon marketed to children and teens throughout the crafty 1970s. But long before it became trendy in the States and UK, paper flora had been used around the world for centuries, notably in East Asia and Mexico. At one of several floral vignettes from Lewis Miller’s book Styling Nature that ran as a feature in March/April 2016. That was the first issue—story even—I worked on when I came on staff at Flower, and this image in particular made my heart skip a beat from the happy realization I would get to work with such lovely images on a daily basis. Even the rusty, dusty warehouse setting piques my interest—from the abundance of gilded mirrors that tease with furtive glimpses of the winsome belle of the ball to the folding chairs stacked like over-eager dance partners awaiting their turn and the hopeful bucketed ladies-in-waiting reflected just beyond the spotlight.
