Driving around my town, Birmingham, Alabama, and spotting a few yellow leaves—the first signs of reprieve from summer’s unrelenting 90- and 100-degree temperatures—I am filled with hope and exhilaration. Remember when you were in grade school and middle school, and you were excited to start the school year? You couldn’t wait to see who your teachers were, and what your textbooks were like, and of course, who your classmates would be. We’d rather get the finished product and move on. Not so with architect Bobby McAlpine, who writes about his work so eloquently he might be mistaken for a poet with a drafting table. Adri’s inspiration My single-source inspiration was the mustard combo rose, which works well with many different palettes, like the cream, pale peach, dark mauve, and burgundy one I used. I also wanted to include foliage that was distinct from the traditional blooms found at the flower market. I visited one of my favorite local nurseries to search for unique accent pieces that would complement the muted palette I envisioned. Delicate eucalyptus, coleus, and dainty foliage added interest without overpowering the focal pieces. Fall is my favorite season,” says Harjeet. “I adore working with late-summer and early-autumn blooms because of their lushness, large size, and vibrancy. Colorado can be a harsh climate for flower growing, but Meg McGuire, a flower farmer at Red Daisy Farm outside of Denver, has perfected it. For me, working with her local flowers is a no-brainer because of the freshness, high quality, and communal aspect of supporting a local producer. My hope with these arrangements is to highlight the warm, cozy beauty of fall.
