You may not think that ‘challenging’ and ‘downright sneaky’ are compliments but these were welcome comments for the course-layers at the National Field Archery Society’s (NFAS) annual 3D championships on the late May bank holiday weekend. With good weather and Thoresby Park Estate offering two thousand acres of mixed woodland across gently undulating terrain, the conditions were perfect for competition, which ended with only four of 2018’s winners retaining their trophies. Unsighted remains the most used approach, with over three-quarters of competitors not using sights. GBR WIN SIX SPOTS FOR TOKYO 2020 AS OLYMPIC PLACES AWARDED The majority of places for Olympic competition at Tokyo 2020 were handed out at the World Championships in Den Bosch, Netherlands. (see box on the right). GBR recurves had a triumphant meet, becoming the only non-Asian team behind the dominating trio of Korea, China and Chinese Taipei to qualify six full spots for the Tokyo Olympics. The women's team then ran their luck and skill all the way to the bronze medal match, where they upset a ragged China to edge out a win. It was a fairytale run for Richard Priestman's teams, who had worked extremely hard to get to this point – but so had a lot of other squads on the packed field at the Dukes. Everyone involved in archery, and many in the wider world of sport, knows about the dominance of the South Korean recurve teams in international competition, and especially at the Olympics. At the World Championships, a Korean man has held the title for 12 of the last 13 editions. (The run was broken by Michele Frangilli of Italy in 2003.) But this year, for the first time since 1993, no Korean man contested the final – or even the bronze medal match. Due to this assumption, we tend to see a lack of advice when it comes to sports science, especially sports nutrition. The 2019 Hyundai World Archery Championships in 's-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands was by some distance the biggest major international archery tournament ever held. The total runners were 590 from 88 countries – 200 recurve men, 153 recurve women, 139 compound men and 98 compound women – and it also served as the main Olympic qualifier for teams and a handful of individuals. Despite all the technical papers on recurve stabilisation, when you ask top coaches and archers about their stabilisation set up and how they arrived at their current configuration, all will say that it was achieved through trial and error. Today there are many companies making stabilisers and associated products, varying wildly in price. The price difference is down to the materials used, production costs and the cost of the research and development deployed to make the finished article. Most long and short rods are now made from carbon, or a mix of carbon and fibreglass as found at the cheaper end of the market. Most archery fans are familiar with Antalya, the pleasantly relaxed beach resort on the Turkish Mediterranean coast. You may be familiar with the fact that it’s an eternal fixture on the World Cup circuit, having hosted every single stage since the inception of the competition, but it’s become very much part of the fabric of international archery too. The excellent weather, and the wide range of accommodation near the Turkish archery federation’s base camp, next to the main football stadium, means that it has become a training camp base for many other teams and squads during the rest of the year as well.
