Big Biba opened in much larger premises on Kensington High Street, London. Designer Barbara Hulanicki and her husband Simon Fitz-Simon spent £1m refurbishing the Art Deco Derry and Toms department store to house Biba’s distinctive collection of clothes and accessories. The first Biba boutique opened in 1964 after a Daily Mirror article featured one of Barbara’s dresses for just £3 and orders flooded into the mail-order business. The brand expanded, while honouring Hulanicki’s vision to sell affordable but distinctive clothes. Heading for a winter battle Age UK has launched a petition to save the Winter Fuel Payment for struggling pensioners. After a government announcement to make the benefit means tested in England and Wales, only those receiving pension credit and certain other benefits will now receive the annual payment of up to £300 per household. The charity for the elderly says that will leave as many as two million pensioners battling to afford heating bills this winter and is calling for a halt to the plan.
