LEATHER CARE I love my bitless, but you do have to keep an eye on the leatherwork, particularly on the styles where it bends back. It can get a bit rough if not cleaned and oiled regularly. Since then it’s expanded to cover mandatory use for workwear as well as widespread use by cyclists, riders and other road users. ■ Hi-vis clothing is made from reflective materials, giving it its light-reflecting properties. There are two main materials used in the making of hi-vis clothing — micro-prismatic tape and glass bead reflective tape. ■ Hi-vis clothing comes in a range of colours, including yellow, pink and green. Say what? QI’m intrigued to know how many communicative noises horses have in their repertoire and what each sound means. Michael Vale, Devon Jenni says... Horses can make a number of different sounds to communicate different things — they can whinny, nicker, squeal, blow, snore, snort, grunt and groan. What’s in a whinny? Whinnies are contact calls heard on separation and reunion. They’re the longest and loudest noise a horse makes because they need to be heard over long distances. Horses distressed by separation make drawn-out, higher-pitched whinnies. When they regain contact with each other, whinnies are shorter and deeper in pitch. Nickers in a twist Nickers are low-pitched greetings between a mare and her foal, and also between stallions and mares during courtship where excitement and tension make for…

Horses should have worms and treating them is only necessary because we manage our horses in such a way that they develop higher worm burdens than they would in a natural situation. Wormers, therefore, should only be used to offset our intensive management practices in order to prevent disease. A low worm egg count is not a bad thing; a high worm egg count should prompt treatment to limit the numbers of parasites on the pasture. Horses have different susceptibilities to worms and in most populations a few horses will shed most of the eggs. Nicky wants to keep him ticking over during the winter with some low-key riding club events, but she’s noticed he’s dropping weight now that the weather is colder and he’s lost some muscle tone too. Nicky hacks or schools Mason most days. He’s turned out for between four and six hours a day on reasonable grazing and has ad-lib haylage overnight. Clare says: On the 1-9 body condition scoring scale, Nicky rates Mason as 4, so she’s right to think about additional feeding. FAT SCORING IS a hands-on approach to tracking your horse’s body condition, allowing you to feel any changes. Visual scoring is rarely as accurate as hands-on scoring, so it’s important to thoroughly examine your horse. It’s sometimes tricky to see the difference between muscle and fat, but when you feel it, it’s more obvious. Muscle feels firm, whereas fat feels softer, spongier and sometimes lumpy. Fat scoring isn’t just useful for horses who are overweight. It can track progress in horses who need to gain weight too. You should aim to score your horse once a fortnight. This helps you to track any changes in condition before they become too dramatic and potentially cause health concerns. Ideally, the same person should do the scoring each time as they will score…

IN 2018 THERE were two outbreaks of equine influenza (flu) in the UK. So far in 2019 there have been over 220. In February, the British racing industry came to a halt as 35 outbreaks of flu were confirmed. The rapid spread of flu throughout the UK highlighted the low vaccination rate — only around 50% of horses being vaccinated. Now more owners are becoming vigilant to the signs of flu, implementing good biosecurity measures and ensuring that their horses are vaccinated. Understanding immunity Antibodies help to protect your horse from flu, but must be above a certain level for clinical protection. The third vaccination in a primary course is essential because immunity reduces between the second and third vaccinations, potentially leaving horses more susceptible to infection in a period…

Sugar and starch combined is referred to as the NSC (nonstructural carbohydrates) level, and for a horse with Cushing’s or laminitis the aim is for the NSC level to be 10-12% of his total diet. Calculate NSC levels by working out the grams per day of starch and sugar your horse is consuming in both his feed and fibre. As an example, if your balancer contains 15% NSC and you feed 100g per day, then your horse is getting 15g of NSC from his balancer. You must then calculate the grams of NSC your grass and hay is providing and add it all together to check that the total amount of grams per day does not exceed 10-12% of your horse’s total diet.…

FEEDING EX-RACEHORSES follows the same principles as feeding any other horse — forage first, supplemented with calories, protein, vitamins and minerals. In training, racehorses are fed high-energy, low-fibre diets, with large volumes of compound feed and small amounts of forage. This takes its toll on the digestive system. Straight out of training, you will need to carefully plan the changes to your new horse’s diet and lifestyle. You can’t simply cut out hard feed and switch to forage. Most ex-racehorses are lean and muscular and need to gain weight and condition for their life as a riding horse. Their new diet should provide calories for weight gain and protein to support muscle development and the topline that correct training will achieve. All horses and ponies should receive a forage-based diet — either pasture or preserved forage (hay/haylage and chaff-based feeds). Some may also need additional energy (and sometimes protein) provided by concentrate feeds. However, while most concentrate feeds are fortified with vitamins and minerals, if the intake of these is below manufacturer’s recommendations, the levels of key micronutrients may not meet your horse’s requirements. UK pastures (and therefore hay/ haylage) are low in important minerals such as selenium, copper and zinc. While grass contains vital vitamins, preserving it as hay or haylage can result in significant losses of these essential nutrients, so horses tend to receive inadequate levels of them during the winter months when they have limited access to pasture. The Paso Fino was the horse of choice for the Spanish Conquistadors as early as the 15th century. Cold temperatures can exacerbate joint conditions in horses, but there are things you can do to help reduce your horse’s suffering: ■ Stable him on deep, warm bedding to help keep his joints warm at night and encourage him to lie down. ■ Consider bandaging his legs overnight for additional warmth. ■ Spend extra time warming up and cooling down before and after exercise to give your horse’s joints more time to react. ■ Movement can help painful joints, so try to keep your horse as active as possible, with plenty of turnout and exercise in the colder weather. ■ Stretching your horse’s joints gently can help to keep them supple and stop them getting stiff. ■ A good groom using plenty of elbow grease can get the circulation going…

THE EQUINE URINARY tract consists of a pair of kidneys that drain into the urinary bladder via narrow tubes called ureters. Urine exits the bladder via the urethra. In contrast to other species, normal equine urine is visually cloudy due to an abundance of both crystals and mucous. Fortunately, disease of the equine urinary tract is a relatively rare occurrence but, if it does happen, clinical signs include increased or decreased drinking and urination, reduced appetite, lethargy, fever, weight loss and colic to name but a few. OLDER HORSES AND ponies have special requirements. They demand a higher nutritional content from their diet because age can decrease the body’s ability to digest feed efficiently and their immune systems can become compromised as they get older. Along with greater nutritional needs, older horses are often predisposed to laminitis and Cushing’s disease (PPID; pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction). Q My horse is very excitable over the winter, but he needs to maintain his weight. What should I feed? A: Decreased turnout and a reduced workload because of bad weather can quickly lead to excitable behaviour. One of the major causes of this is feeding a diet high in sugar and starch. The closer you can get to feeding in sympathy with the way your horse has evolved to eat, the more relaxed he’ll be. Allow plenty of turnout and, as grass quality and availability reduces, offer him ad-lib hay.
