DOG DATA New research by Direct Line Pet Insurance revealed just one in four stolen dogs were returned to their owners, while American Bulldogs were the most stolen breed in 2022. LONDON ANIMAL CHARITY GIFTED GENEROUS GRANT Mayhew has been awarded a £145,480 grant by the Pets at Home Foundation to develop and extend its Animal Assisted Interventions (AAI) programme, TheraPaws. This will enable the animal welfare charity to recruit a full-time coordinator to help build community partnerships, coordinate sessions, and recruit, train, and support volunteers to improve the physical and mental well-being of vulnerable people in London. Thanks to the grant, it’s hoped visits to hospitals, mental health clinics, care homes, schools, and eating disorder clinics will be increased during 2023. The North York Moors National Park lies in the north-east of England and was established as a national park in 1952. It has 1,408 miles of public rights of way, including The Cleveland Way National Trail, which is 109 miles long. The park is home to 1,500 boundary stones and crosses, including one of the oldest Christian monuments in England, Lilla Cross, which dates from 626 AD. A Devon animal lover is taking her campaign to raise awareness of canine hereditary diseases to a popular dog and family festival this month. June is National Microchipping Month, and Petlog — the UK’s largest lost and found pet database — is urging owners to update their details, in case the unthinkable happens and their dog is lost or stolen. Sylwia Kulasik, from Northampton, was heartbroken when her dog, Dejzi, went missing in Carmarthen, Wales, in 2019. After three agonising years of searching, Dejzi was finally found and scanned by a local vet. It’s unlikely the pair would have been reunited without a microchip and Sylwia’s current contact details, stored safely on the Petlog database. “This National Microchipping Month, Petlog wants to get more pets microchipped and more owners checking their details are up-to-date,” said Petlog spokesperson Bill Lambert. Tammie Fox still can’t believe how dramatically her life has changed since she offered to care for a rescue puppy for a couple of days 18 months ago. The 42-year-old nail technician wasn’t looking for another dog when she spotted an online post that melted her heart. Donations to Battersea in memory of Paul O’Grady have topped an incredible £200,000. The animal welfare charity has been overwhelmed by contributions, letters, calls, emails, and messages of support from the public following Paul’s unexpected death, aged 67, at the end of March. The community dogs project is a remarkable collaboration between local authorities and other social care providers and community dog practitioners using assistance dogs specifically trained to help a range of clients, from children in schools to the elderly. The service offers people, who aren’t able to care for a dog of their own, the opportunity to benefit from the skills of a trained assistance dog.
