It’s been a long winter, and I’ll bet everyone is excited to get back into riding once the days start getting longer and spring weather arrives. Spring is a great time to schedule your horse’s annual checkup and vaccinations to make sure he’s healthy and ready to ride. In this issue, Young Rider’s favorite vet, Dr. Diehl, shares her advice for a spring wellness plan, including vaccinations, deworming and more on page 28. You may have seen therapy dogs out and about, but have you ever heard of a therapy horse? When Chloe Butler, 9, visited her Aunt Aggie’s assisted-living home, she saw dogs visiting the center’s residents. They were therapy dogs, trained to be companions to people with special needs. Seeing how happy the residents were to visit with the dogs, Chloe wondered why she couldn’t bring her ponies to visit. “I thought it would be cool if we used ponies instead of dogs,” Chloe says. She found out that while she couldn’t take her ponies to the assisted-living center. However, Miniature Horses are considered therapy animals in her home state of Illinois. So you’ve decided to go to riding camp! Whether it’s a day camp or sleepaway camp, you’re probably wondering what to expect. These tips will help you head to camp with confidence and have a great time while you’re there. Camp Prep Most camps provide you with a list of recommended items ahead of time. Go over the list with your parents to make sure you have all the required items. When you’re ready to pack, make yourself a checklist to be sure you remember the essentials. • HELMETS: Most riding camps provide helmets for campers, but double check this beforehand. 1. You are just as important as the older staff. You play an important role just like everyone else. 2. If you have a question, be honest and ask someone. The other staff members are there to help you. 3. It’s OK to make mistakes—no one on staff is perfect. 4. Organization is key! Make sure you know where everything is around the barn before the campers arrive. 5. The barn rules are there for a reason. Follow them even if they’re different from your barn rules at home. Now is the time to book your summer camp! I went to three different horse camps as a kid and later was a counselor at one of them. I learned so many new things, like barrel racing and vaulting. If you are able to go to camp, definitely consider it! I recently welcomed Ria, a 4-year-old offtrack Thoroughbred, to my herd. Training a young horse has made me extra aware of my riding habits, and I’ve been paying special attention to my hand position. Analiese, age 14, has owned Hollywood, a Missouri Fox Trotter, for four years. Both Analiese and her horse have overcome challenges: Hollywood is blind in one eye and Analiese has spina bifida and has little use of her legs. Analiese and Hollywood have competed in local rodeo queen and 4-H events. Together they have earned several honorary rodeo queen titles. Apple of My Eye tells the story of Bailey (Avery Arendes), a young girl who loses her eyesight after a horseback riding accident. Her parents, played by Amy Smart and Liam McIntyre, take her to Southeastern Guide Dogs to introduce her to some potential companions. Bailey doesn’t feel drawn to any of the dogs. Luckily, she meets Charlie (portrayed by legendary actor Burt Reynolds) who has a better idea; a miniature guide horse. Charlie introduces her to Apple, who becomes her companion and surrogate eyes. “There’s a whole other world out there waiting to be discovered in books,” says Jess Burkhart. She’s the author of one of Young Rider’s favorite book series, Canterwood Crest. Jess has always loved horses. “I don’t even remember exactly how or when it started,” she says. She had surgery on her spine when she was just 13, and she hasn’t been allowed to ride since then. That hasn’t kept her from creating a world of horses in her imagination, however. Brighten up your horse’s stall by adding some personality and a pop of color with this super cute sign. First, find a piece of wood to use. Knowing how to balance correctly on your seat bones can be tough for new or inexperienced riders, but it’s important to learn. As the old rhyme goes, the seat bone’s connected to the leg bone; the leg bone cues the horse and the horse responds. Beth Bass, coach of more than 35 Appaloosa Horse Club World and Reserve World Champions, has her riders work on three exercises to improve balance: standing stirrup, knee up, and one-stirrup balance. “There is a time and a place to sit with more weight on one side than the other, such as lead departures or if you are asking for the horse’s hip in,” says Beth. “But I teach my riders not to consistently sit heavier on one seat bone than the other.” Claire, one…
