Industrial designer Brooks Stevens coined the term “planned obsolescence” in 1954, based on the consumer urge to own something a little newer, a little better and a little sooner than necessary. Two years later, he introduced the futuristic Evinrude Lark concept boat. It premiered at the 1956 National Motor Boat Show and embodied postwar optimism: aircraft-style bubble windshields, a yoke-style steering wheel and sculpted tailfins that concealed retractable ski-tow reels. Powered by a 30 hp Evinrude outboard, the $11,000 concept boat featured bucket seats inspired by the sports cars of the day. It could hit 35 miles per hour.
