ABOUT A DECADE ago, when the Mega-Dock opened at Safe Harbor Charleston City, the 454-foot Lürssen Rising Sun pulled in. Folks in South Carolina were treated to a sight normally reserved for the likes of Southeast Florida, Monaco or St. Barts. ¶ Now, the marina is building a new MegaDock to welcome even more of the world’s biggest yachts. Benetti Yachts in Italy has sold Hull No. 1 of the Class 44M, a fiberglass yacht that is the flagship of the builder’s Class line. Exterior styling and interior design are by Giorgio M. Cassetta, with delivery planned in winter 2025. A FUNNY THING HAPPENED to Nordhavn chief of design Jeff Leishman one day while he was standing on the docks, looking out at the boats. Before him were a Nordhavn 120 and a Nordhavn 96, docked side by side. He knows each model inside and out, but in that moment, he realized just how different in size the two vessels were, and how hard it might be for owners to move up from one to the next. “It was evident that we needed something in between,” he says. ¶ Enter the Nordhavn 112, which the company hopes will appeal not only to buyers looking to move up to a bigger boat, but also to buyers who want to downsize from larger yachts with extensive crew into something less complex. ¶…

VERSATILITY IS AT THE HEART of the 47 Molokai, which will be the second and larger offering in the Aquila Power Catamarans Offshore range. The vessel measures 49 feet, 4 inches length overall with a 14-foot-7-inch beam. WHEN I ARRIVED AT THE MARINA, I ASKED THE DOCK MASTER WHERE the Ocean Alexander 32E was moored. He grinned and said, “Oh, you’ll see it.” ¶ He was right. The 32E didn’t so much float as tower head and shoulders over most other boats in the marina. Think Arnold Schwarzenegger at a debutante ball, or Kilimanjaro above the plains of the Serengeti. A Miami-based yachtsman commissioned the build on this 141-foot yacht from Turkish builder Alia, with a brief that calls for maximizing the open-air lifestyle of Florida and the Bahamas. Omega Architects in the Netherlands handled the yacht’s design, with sunbathing spaces aft, on the foredeck and on the sun deck, which has a hot tub. Inside, there are five guest staterooms, including a main-deck master, along with quarters for seven crew. Sliding-glass doors on either side of the salon help bring the outdoors in. This bold, blue beauty is Project Thunderball, a custom Vripack design that the Italian shipyard CRN is building with a steel hull and an aluminum superstructure. The Dutch design firm Vripack handled exteriors and naval architecture, with interiors and outdoor furniture by Nauta Design in Italy. Inside, the five-deck yacht will have accommodations for 12 guests and 15 crew. Gross tonnage is 1,100, and a peak-shaving system will reduce fuel burn. FORTY YEARS AGO THIS PAST SEPTEMBER, IN THE waters of Rhode Island Sound just off the coastal city of Newport, a crew of Aussies shocked the sailing world. The 12 Metre Australia II defeated the American boat Liberty to win the 1983 America’s Cup and bring the New York Yacht Club’s 132-year defense of the Auld Mug to a conclusion. I find myself in need of the Hogwarts Sorting Hat to properly categorize Azimut’s Magellano 60. Judging by much of the specification sheet and the accommodations plan, it seems like a mainstream flybridge motoryacht. But it’s not. Strictly speaking, the Magellano 60 is a semidisplacement model, but then again, these designs aren’t normally quite so sprightly. Azimut uses the term “crossover” for its Magellanos.
