The yard is promising a wealth of options for the 60’s layout, with the galley on the main deck or in one of the hulls, and with three or four staterooms for overnight accommodations. One of the staterooms can be outfitted as a gym, and crew quarters can be included at the stern or the bow. Solar panels can be added to the roof for more eco-friendly cruising. WHILE AVIARA labels its 40-footer as a “day extender,” I found it to be an innovative outboard-powered flagship that’s suitable for stretching days afloat into long weekends of family fun. ¶ There is 6-foot-1-inch headroom, an enclosed head with a shower, and a mid-cabin with a queen-size berth and a memory-foam mattress. The dinette converts to a nearly queen-size berth. THE ROARING SOUND of antique airplanes filled the skies as Legend, Hull No. 1 of the Wheeler 38, rolled gently at the Ocean Reef Club in early December. Inside this classic yacht’s salon, I stepped between two worlds, present and past. Legend is a near-perfect replica—from its exterior, at least—of Ernest Hemingway’s Pilar, a 38-foot Wheeler Shipyard fishing boat from 1934. ¶ This one boat epitomized the purpose of the 26th Vintage Weekend at the club: paying homage to the tradition of vessels, vehicles and aircraft, and to the owners who pour countless hours into restoring and preserving them. ¶ The event showcased nine vintage yachts, 70 classic cars and 16 antique aircraft. Roald Dahl’s character Willy Wonka had a great glass elevator that transported him wherever he wanted to go. Hull No. 1 of Overmarine’s Mangusta Oceano 44 reminded me of that story. MORE THAN A FEW PEOPLE from the United States and beyond have been frustrated the past few years when attempting to book a charter vacation. In 2020, the pandemic pretty much shut down international travel, forcing widespread booking cancellations. All those charters got rebooked into 2021 and 2022, often at the same time yacht owners were pulling their vessels off the charter market and instead keeping them for private, socially distanced use. And there were shipyard shutdowns that hampered construction schedules, leading to fewer new charter yachts entering the market than in previous years. The boat’s lines are based on its bigger sibling, the TT460, with an integral glass windshield. Note the high bulwarks all around for safety on board, as well as the olding tables amidships that can convert into a relaxation area protected by the hardtop. Azimut’s S7 is designed for lower fuel consumption than competing models. To help make that possible, the Italian builder used carbon fiber for construction on quite a bit of the upper part of the yacht. The idea was to preserve the S7’s center of gravity (and, thus, guest comfort on board) while reducing the vessel’s overall weight. The result, according to Azimut, is a 30 percent reduction in weight as well as a 15 percent reduction in typical roll momentum. The S7’s layout includes four staterooms, thanks to extra interior volume that the use of space-saving IPS engines affords. There’s also a cabin for a crew member. The Armenian word lusine translates to “moon” in English. That’s why, aboard the 198-foot Heesen Lusine, lunar and celestial themes are everywhere, from wall features to the teak decking. A crescent moon, for instance, is in the middle of the helipad. CLEAR ABOVE, VISIBILITY UNLIMITED. Theseglorious conditions greeted us as Simrad ambassador Mark Maus drove us down Fort Lauderdale, Florida’s Stranahan River aboard his Yellowfin 36 center-console. However, it was impossible to miss the half-dozen container ships anchored a few miles offshore. We entered open waters, and Maus turned to port, paralleling the ships and spinning his Simrad Halo 3004 open-array radar. I stared at the 19-inch Simrad NSO evo3S multifunction display. The ships were there, of course, but the radar was also painting targets behind these giant metal walls. I studied the screen and compared it with the actual horizon. FOR COUPLES interested in the cruising lifestyle, the MJM Yachts 40z is a vessel worth considering. The yacht’s forepeak stateroom has an island berth for weekend or longer voyages. Bayliss Boats in North Carolina started construction on Overtime in August 2020. The yacht was completed in November 2022, two months ahead of schedule. Overtime has standard equipment, such as a Seakeeper stabilizer, Furuno’s Omni sonar and Northern Lights generators, while ustom features include what Bayliss calls “an elaborate live well circulating system” that the owner plans to use for a substantial fishing program based out of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico Inside,. Hylas Yachts, long known for its Taiwanese-built sailboats, now has three powerboats among its offerings. The M49, shown here, joins the M44 and the M58s in the power lineup. The M49’s design is by New Zealand’s Salthouse, whose background is in Down East vessels with a commercial-fishing and offshore-angling heritage. Hylas says the helm station has no blind spots from stem to stern. Amenities for onboard entertaining include a refrigerator, a barbecue and a dinette. ACR’S RESQLINK AIS PERSONAL LOCATOR BEACON isthefirst to leverage the automatic identification system (AIS), the global navigation satellite system (GNSS), and the 406 MHz and 121.5 MHz frequencies. This multi-signal beacon gets position information from its GNSS receiver, and then bundles and transmits that information to a Cospas-Sarsat satellite via its 406 MHz transceiver.
