The island nation, which used to add only a 4 percent charter fee that went to its port department, has now added an extra 10 percent VAT for all charters booked after July 1, 2022. TAKING IN THE PROFILE OF THE CL YACHTS CLX96 flagship at Lauderdale Marine Center in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, my eyes were overloaded with a sense of new—and yet something familiar. ¶ The familiar starts at the near-plumb and proud bow that has a sea-splitting entry, transitioning lower—gently and linearly—before resolving at the cockpit. This design also allows the yacht to carry a good bit of its 24-foot beam forward, creating more interior space without sacrificing seakindliness. Enhancing the yacht’s clean lines, which were penned by Milan-based designer Jozeph Forakis, is a two-tone white-and-gray hull color that visually slims the profile. ABOUT 20 YEARS AGO, Yachting ran an article with the title “Game Theory.” It explained that the way yachts were being outfitted for charter was changing. Prior to that time, most yachts available for charter carried water skis and snorkeling gear, and had a RIB as a tender for zipping around. Some yacht owners and captains back then were just starting to think bigger. “The trend is piling up as many toys as you can,” a charter broker said at the time. “They just want to have a full repertoire, a variety, something for everyone.” ¶ Today, of course, that trend is now considered standard operating procedure for charter yachts worldwide, with guests expecting to find an arsenal of water toys ready for use at a moment’s notice. ADVANCED MECHANICAL SOLUTIONS’ Telescopic Light Mast can disappear flush into a deck. It’s a vertically articulating mast that uses an internal spiral cable, an internal spring, and a freshwater rinsing system instead of external rigging or an external cable reel. The mast’s internal spring is tensioned when it’s extended, and AMS created a spiral cable that expands and contracts (think Slinky) by 26.25 feet. ¶ The system has four water nozzles inside a belowdecks tube that clean each section as the mast articulates. ¶ One big challenge when creating the Telescopic Light Mast was supporting the spar at extension. There’s a revolution underway in the sport of sailing, and it can be summed up in one simple word: foiling. ¶ More specifically, we’re talking about hydrofoils, the winglike appendages mounted beneath the hull of a vessel that, at a certain speed, lift the hull clear of the water. When this happens, the foiling sailboats can reach speeds two or even three times faster than possible in “displacement” mode. ¶ And sailboats are just one element of the foiling revolution: Surfboards, paddleboards and powerboats are also getting in on the act. ¶ An Italian naval architect named Enrico Forlanini is credited with developing the first waterborne hydrofoils, which he affixed to a 60 hp, airscrew-driven craft that topped offat 36.9 knots back in 1906. It typically holds true whether the yacht they’re buying is 90 feet or well into triple-digit territory. ¶ Custom Line, whose semicustom models start at 93 feet, certainly attracts clients who consider superyacht ownership an evolution of their boating life. IN 1889, AMERICAN JOURNALIST Nellie Bly circumnavigated the world in 72 days by train, steamship, rickshaw, horse and donkey, besting the timeline that author Jules Verne laid out in his fictional challenge. ¶ In 2021, Nellie Bly—a modern tug built by Damen Shipyards in the Netherlands with a Sea Machines SM300 autonomous command-and-control system—completed a 1,000-nautical-mile circumnavigation of Denmark in 13 days, sailing from Hamburg, Germany. ¶ The tug’s journey also had an element of reality overtaking the imagination, given that Nellie Bly’s two commanding officers were in Boston. And while the tug carried two professional mariners on board, the SM300 called the shots for more than 95 percent of the journey.
