Here is something that even the most die-hard Guy Harvey fans may not know about him: He’s a dog guy. ¶ Indeed, the man whose name and illustrations have become synonymous with fishing and ocean conservation is also a fan of canines, which perhaps made it inevitable that he would lend his artwork to a line of pet beds. ¶ “Personally, we are a huge dog-loving family, so we cannot wait for our dogs to get comfortable in one of these beds,” Harvey says. ¶ The new pet beds are available in multiple designs, with each design offered in small/medium ($119) and large/extra-large ($139) sizes. Matchmakers A notable Ocean Alexander detail is grain-matched wood. The wood grain in cabinets continues seamlessly from one panel to the next. This finish is not easy to achieve, but it is a hallmark of superb craftsmanship. I NOTED THE OCEAN ALEXANDER 32L’s gentle, sweeping curve from bow to stern. The look reminded me of what I’d seen in the pages of Yachting during my youth, when designers such as Phil Rhodes, Sparkman & Stephens, Bill Garden, Alden, and others drew gently curving classic sheers. The Hatteras Yachts GT65 Carolina has some design changes from its GT siblings. The flybridge is pushed back a little, in a design nod to earlier Hatteras sport-fish yachts. There are newly designed side windows, and the engine-room side vents are longer. But the GT65 retains the series’ trademarks, such as generous bow flare, seakeeping ability and fish-raising muscle. ¶ The owner of our test boat, Rascal, is a seasoned yachtsman, angler and family man who considered all of these attributes in his purchase. The wheel- or joystick-driven Mercury 7.6-liter V-12 600 hp Verado combines many firsts. It’s the first outboard with a steerable gear case; the first with a V-12 powerhead; and the first with a two-speed transmission. These innovations are also practical. The steerable gear case and electrohydraulic control system let the engine be mounted on 27-inch centers, freeing up transom space. The outboard’s plusor-minus 45-degree steering angle can eliminate the need for thrusters. The V-12 powerhead boosts low-end power and makes the engine responsive to throttle input, and the two-speed transmission means smooth performance throughout the rpm range. ¶ “The overall package size of the engine was a challenge that Mercury had to overcome throughout development, which drove a lot of innovation,” says Jeff Becker, Mercury’s category manager for outboard engines.…

Range at cruise speed is about 40 miles. The measurable torque provided by the vessel’s powerplant setup helps get the boat from zero to 17.4 knots in 4.2 seconds. This 53 has an exterior design from Alberto Mancini, who also pens the new models in the builder’s express-cruiser S series. The bow is pointed toward the nearby majestic San Juan Islands, and its satellite-communications antennas punctuate the skyline. These yacht owners remain comfortably connected while being able to enjoy forays to explore Pacific Northwest beaches and parks, or hikes up Orcas Island’s Mount Constitution, rather than remaining tethered to their at-home internet connections. ¶ The trouble is, open-contract VSAT antennas historically haven’t come in small packages. The idea for the deepest-diving acrylic submersible in the world—able to descend more than 13,000 feet—started with thickness. ¶ “Acrylic, up until a few years ago, had been really restricted in how thick you could make it,” says John Ramsay, principal design engineer at Triton Submarines. The difference between the Triton 3300/3 (able to take three people to about 3,300 feet) that launched a decade ago and the new 13000/2 Titanic Explorer is acrylic about three times thicker. “We discovered that we could go much deeper with the new technology.” ¶ Being able to go deeper meant thinking about new features. Four guys with Medicare cards and sciatica—a boat designer, boatbuilder, boat captain and boat broker— are sitting in a bar. They’re jawboning about a boat. Not one they designed, built, ran or sold, but the one that made all their careers possible. ¶ It’s the origin story of the modern marine industry. ¶ The boat was penned by Ray Hunt and inspired by the Sea Sled, an alien form noodled in the 1930s by a Harvard graduate named Albert Hickman. The craft’s inverted-V bow and pancake-style after sections were more than its wood build could tolerate, and it beat itself into extinction.
