This handheld torch allowed me to pick out a masthead halyard at its exit point 16m above the deck on the blackest and wettest of nights, making it one of my most reached-for pieces of kit for this race. She may not be pretty, but this exciting MINI TRANSAT design employs some interesting new devices to make her go fast, reports James Boyd French yacht designer and Mini sailor David Raison has a lot to answer for. His 21ft Magnum scow, designed to the Mini class rule, was one of the most significant steps forward in offshore yacht design in recent years, particularly after it proved itself by winning the 2011 Mini Transat. If stability is one of the greatest performance drivers, then scows, with their ultra-high-volume bows, provide added hull form stability compared with their narrow-bowed cousins, increasing righting moment just as adding lead to the bulb might. One name stands out when you think of multihull design: the British designer Nigel Irens. His career began when he studied Boatyard Management at what is now Solent University before opening a sailing school in Bristol and later moving to a multihull yard. He and a friend, Mark Pridie, won their class in the 1978 Round Britain race in a salvaged Dick Newick-designed 31-footer. Later, in 1985, he won the Round Britain Race with Tony Bullimore, with whom he was jointly awarded Yachtsman of the Year. The aluminium hull of a new J Class yacht, Svea, has been sold and is being fitted out by Vitters Shipyard in the Netherlands, taking the tally of these formidable yachts to nine. With the possibility that she may race, there is hope that she will be part of the largest fleet of J Class yachts ever to be seen, at the America’s Cup in Bermuda in 2017. The 143ft hull of Svea is the longest of the current fleet and is based on a spectacular original design by Tore Holm from 1937 that was never built. Spinlock Lume-On The simple ideas are the best. Spinlock’s Lume-On is one of the most affordable and far-reaching marine safety products I’ve seen. It works as an addition to traditional lifejacket lights. Whereas integrated lights provide a sharp, single beam, the Lume-On illuminates the whole of the lifejacket bladder. The compact LEDs stick to the underbelly of each bladder, which uses the large fluorescent surface like a diffuser to maximise the visibility of the flashing light. This can make a man overboard easier to spot and make it easier for the helmsman to approach the casualty safely. It works using two water-sensing pins. CHRIS TIBBS is a meteorology and weather router, as well as a professional sailor and navigator, forecasting for Olympic teams and the ARC rally Rarely do we have a day when the wind is steady in both direction and strength; we are even seeing warnings on forecasts that gusts may be 40 per cent, or higher, than the average wind speed. These are gusts, while a warning of thunder or showers indicates that strong squalls are possible. But first let us look at some definitions. What is a gust? A gust is a rapid increase in the wind speed relative to the mean strength at the time, and it is short-lived.
